Tennis starts with a bang

Jeff Davis High School started off their 2021 season with a bang.
At home, on 10 newly built courts, the Jackets faced Fitzgerald Feb 2. The Lady Jackets won 5-0 against the Hurricanes. Junior MaKenzie Gardner played an awesome match at first doubles really placing the ball well. The boys won 4-1 against the ‘canes. Junior John Graham led his doubles team to victory.
On Feb. 4 the Jackets faced off with Brantley County at home. The Lady Jackets lost a close one 2-3. Coach Mary Catherine Kemp applauded the play of senior Hailey Beach pulling out a win for the Jackets after playing for over two hours. The boys lost 1-4 against the Herons. Caleb Beach, a sophomore, also pulled out a win for the team with a long, challenging singles match.
On Feb. 8 the Jackets played the Pierce County Bears. The Lady Jackets lost 0-5 against the Bears. The boys lost 1-4. Junior Cameron Lewis won at the top singles spot playing some really good tennis. Coach Kemp also bragged on senior Lem Miller for his play against the Bears. Lem stayed on the court for a very long match, and he played his heart out.
This week the Jackets will face Dodge Feb. 17 and Appling County Feb.18 for their first on-the-road matches.
