Softball tops Toombs, Wayne; Falls to Vidalia
Jeff Davis High’s softball team won two of three road games last week, winning 8-0 over Toombs County Tuesday, falling in a pitchers’ duel 1-0 in nine innings to Vidalia Wednesday and winning 5-3 in eight innings Monday against Wayne County.
In Lyons the Lady Jackets scored seven of their eight runs in the first two innings and Kelsey Parlor pitched a one-hit shutout. Parlor allowed only two base runners, both coming in the second inning on an error and a single. After that, she retired the last 11 batters she faced in order. She had four strikeouts for the game.
In the first, Paige Carter started things with a leadoff single. After Jenna Miles walked, Jaci Underwood delivered a 2-run double. With two outs, Bianca Torres singled to score Underwood and Malleigh Burns followed with a double to push Torres across the plate, making it 4-0.
In the second, Bentlee Metts started the inning and scored on a Carter double. Miles then reached on an error and made it all the way to third as Carter scored. An out later, Ella Wood grounded out to score Miles.
The final run came in the fifth as Torres and Burns had back-to-back, 2-out singles, and Laisa Hernandez bunted and reached on an error as Torres scored.
Carter and Burns both had a double, a single and an RBI. Torres singled twice and drove in a run, Underwood had a double and two RBI, Hernandez and Metts both singled, and Wood drove in a run.
The Vidalia game was a nail-biter, as the Lady Jackets managed only four hits and Vidalia had seven. On Sept. 8, Vidalia came to Hazlehurst and blasted three Lady Jacket pitchers with 15 hits. But last week in Vidalia, Parlor pretty much silenced the Lady Indian bats. Through seven innings, Vidalia managed only three hits. But they picked up four in the two extra innings to take the win.
The JD defense kept the Jackets in the game until the bottom of the ninth.
In the ninth, the Lady Indians used a 1-out double, a walk and another double to pull out the victory.
Both teams turned double plays in the first inning to keep the game scoreless. Jeff Davis’ twin killing came with a runner on first with one out as Miles fielded a grounder at second, threw to shortstop Carter for the one out and Carter relayed to Wood at first.
The Lady Jackets were put down in order in the second, third, fourth and fifth, while Vidalia managed a pair of harmless singles during that stretch.
Hernandez broke the baserunner drought with a bunt single in the sixth but she got no further than second base.
Vidalia also singled in the sixth but the next batter lined out to Miles at second and she threw to first to double up the baserunner.
In the seventh Wood singled but could not advance.
In the bottom of the seventh, Vidalia got a 1-out walk and Carter, Miles and Wood then turned a 6-4-3 double play, the Lady Jackets’ third double play of the game.
Torres collected a 1-out single in the eighth and went to second on a Hernandez sacrifice but that’s as far as she got.
JD survived a scare in the bottom of the eighth as Vidalia started the inning with back-to-back singles. Two ground outs later, the hostesses had runners at second and third, and the next Vidalia batter was intentionally walked to load the bases. The third out then came on a liner to Carter at short.
Miles got a bunt single in the ninth and Wood walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. A pop foul then ended the inning.
Miles, Wood, Torres and Hernandez each had singles. A pair of walks were the only other baserunners for the Lady Jackets.
Parlor gave up one run on seven hits, walked four and struck out two.
The JD Lady Jackets spotted Wayne County to a 3-0 lead after two innings. But from their pitchers Kesleigh Poe and Parlor blanked the Lady Jackets from Jesup.
Jeff Davis was scoreless through three innings, getting their first run in the fourth. A hit batter, a walk and a Burns single loaded the bases and Tia Cornish drove in the run with a ground out to first.
JD tied the score in the fifth. Two hit batters and a Kalleigh Sellers single loaded the bases for the second inning in a row. Burns then singled to right to drive in two runs.
In the top of the eighth, Jeff Davis got the winning runs. Metts singled to start the inning and Carter was hit by a pitch. With one out, Underwood doubled to center to score Metts and push Carter to third. Wood then lofted a sacrifice fly to left to make it 5-3.
Wayne got a 2-out double in the bottom of the eighth but Parlor got the final out on three swinging strikes.
JD got another double play in the game with an Underwood-to-Miles-to-Wood 5-3-1 double play.
Underwood paced the offense with a double, two singles and an RBI. Burns had two singles and an RBI, Miles and Metts both singled, and Wood and Cornish both had an RBI.
Poe pitched the first 5 2/3 innings, giving up no earned runs on five hits, walking three, hitting one and striking out four. Parlor picked up the win in relief. She went 2 1/3 innings, blanking Wayne on two hits, walking none and striking out six.
