Lady Jackets Win 3 Of 4

Vidalia High School’s top ranked girls softball team came to Hazlehurst last Tuesday with their bats swinging as they banged out 15 hits to take an 11-5 win over Jeff Davis. The Lady Jackets rebounded Wednesday and Thursday with road wins over Appling County 5-2 and Swainsboro 17-0 and Monday with a 6-1 victory over Pierce County.
Against Vidalia, the Lady Indians scored three runs in the first inning and led 4-0 before a 3-run Jeff Davis third got JD back in the game. Bentlee Metts and Paige Carter led off the third with back-to-back singles. With runners at 1st and 3rd, Jenna Miles drove in a run on a ground out. With two outs, Ella Wood doubled in a run and Annalese Poole followed with a single, pushing another run across the plate. But Poole was thrown out advancing to second and the rally came to an end.
In the fifth, trailing 6-3, Jeff Davis scored two more times. Carter reached on a one-out error and Miles also reached on an error as Carter scored and Miles advanced to third. Jaci Underwood then grounded out to third, driving in Miles.
The Lady Jackets trailed only 6-5 entering the sixth inning but the visitors scored five runs over the next two innings to win going away.
Poole led the Jeff Davis offense with a pair of singles and an RBI, Wood doubled in a run, Miles singled in a run, and Carter and Bentlee Metts both singled. Underwood had an RBI.
Kelsey Parlor started on the mound and took the loss. She gave up four runs on five hits, walked none, hit two, walked none and struck out none. Kesleigh Poe took over in the third and went three innings. She gave up three earned runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out one. Maeleigh Burns threw the final two innings, giving up one earned run on three hits, walking none and striking out none.
Carter and Bianca Torres were both 3-for-4 at the plate against Appling County.
Carter started the game with a lead-off single, stole second and went to third on a Miles ground out. Underwood then singled to score Carter.
In the second, with pinch runner Laisa Hernandez on second with two outs, Metts layed down a bunt single to drive in Hernandez to make it 2-0.
In the fourth, leading 2-1, the Lady Jackets scored twice.
Torres led off with a single. Two outs later, Metts reached on an error with Torres advancing to third and scoring on an error. Metts stole second and Carter singled to score Metts.
JD’s final run came in the fifth. Underwood singled and advanced to third on a groundout. She then scored as Kalleigh Sellers grounded out to shortstop.
Carter’s and Torres’ hits were all singles with Torres getting an RBI. Underwood had a pair of singles and an RBI, Miles, Parlor and Metts all singled, and Sellers drove in a run.
The Jeff Davis defense turned in two double plays. In the fifth, with one out and runners on second and third, Metts fielded a fly in center, relayed to Underwood who threw to the Sellers at the plate to catch the runner trying to score from second. In the sixth, with a runner at first and no outs, the Lady Jackets turned a Carter-Miles-Burns 6-4-3 double play.
Parlor went the distance on the mound. She gave up one earned run on five hits, hit one, walked one and struck out six.
The Lady Jackets made short work of Swainsboro, winning 17-0 in just three innings.
Jeff Davis scored three runs in each of the first two innings.
In the first, a triple by Miles, three straight singles by Underwood, Wood and Sellers, and Torres reaching on an error produced the three runs.
In the second, a Metts single, a walk to Carter and a Miles ground out got the first run. Underwood followed with run-scoring triple and Wood singled in Underwood.
The 11-run third was a wild one. It started with walks to Riley Mathis and Parlor. Tia Cornish singled in a run, Carter followed with a 2-run double, and Miles singled to push another run across the plate.
Underwood then walked and Wood was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sellers then drilled a 2-run double to center. Burns reached first on third strike passed ball to load the bases again. With two outs, Cornish walked in a run and Carter followed with a line drive, inside the park grand slam home run.
Carter finished with a double, a homer and six RBI. Miles and Underwood both had a single, a triple and two RBI, Sellers doubled and singled and drove in two runs, Wood had two singles and two RBI, Cornish singled and drove in two runs, and Metts added a single.
Parlor threw a one-hit shutout. She walked one and struck out four.
The Lady Jackets jumped on Pierce early with a 2-run first inning and never trailed.
Carter opened the game with a single, stole second and went to third on an error. Miles then singled to score Carter. Miles scored later on a Sellers single
In the third, the Lady Jackets doubled their runs. Again Carter and Miles started the inning with singles and Underwood lofted a sacrifice fly to score Carter. Ella Wood singled to plate Miles.
Metts singled in the fourth, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Carter’s sac fly.
JD’s final run came in the fifth as Wood singled, went to third on a Sellers double and scored on Torres’ fielder’s choice grounder.
Sellers led Jeff Davis at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and an RBI. Carter had two singles, a sacrifice and an RBI, Miles and Wood both had two singles and an RBI, Metts singled, Underwood had a run-scoring sacrifice fly and Torres had an RBI.
The defense turned a 6-4-1 double play from Carter, to Miles, to Wood.
Parlor pitched a complete game, giving up one run on six hits, walking three and striking out five.
