WWII Veteran Buford West Dies
Buford West, one of two surviving Jeff Davis County veterans of World War II, died Aug. 17 at his home.
That leaves former longtime Hazlehurst Mayor Wyatt “Buddy” Spann as the last World War II veteran still alive in Jeff Davis County.
Buford West was 98 years old. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during the war.
A native of Miller County, Mr. West was a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia and served as a school teacher for a few years after his graduation.
He moved to Hazlehurst to take the position of U.S. Government Agricultural and Conservation Service County Agent, a job in which he served the farming community in Jeff Davis County for over 30 years before retiring. He was a member of Hazlehurst First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mrs. Joyce Roberts West of Hazlehurst; daughter, Robin Aycock of Hazlehurst; son-in-law, Clayton Deen of Hazlehurst; brother, Don West (Beth) of Albany; grandchildren, Amber Aycock and Alex Aycock; great-grandchildren, Andrew Aycock and Axel Aycock.
