Jeff Davis Wins Two Over Wayne

Jeff Davis High’s softball team improved its record to 2-1 Monday with a 10-3 win over Wayne County in Hazlehurst. And the jayvees upped their record to 7-0 with an 11-0 victory over the Wayne jayvees.
The Lady Jacket varsity broke out of a 3-3 fourth inning tie with a big 7-run burst to blow their game open.
After Wayne took a 1-0 lead, Jeff Davis answered with a 3-run second inning. Ella Wood opened the inning with a double and scored on a Tia Cornish first-pitch triple. Bianca Torres then plated Cornish with a single to put Jeff Davis up 2-1. Two outs later, Torres scored on a Paige Carter single.
The JD fourth inning started with four consecutive singles by Maeleigh Burns, Bentley Metts, Carter and Jenna Miles, the latter driving in two runs to make it 5-3. Jaci Underwood then cleared the bases with a triple to make it 7-3. After Annalese Poole walked, Wood doubled to score Underwood and pinch runner Laisa Hernandez to up the score to 9-3. Wood went to third on a Cornish ground out and Torres grounded out to push Wood across the plate to make it 10-3.
The JD Jackets got out of a jam in the sixth as the Wayne Jackets loaded the bases with no one out. The next batter lined out to Underwood at third and she caught the runner at 3rd base off the bag for an unassisted double play. Then a fly out to left ended the inning.
Jeff Davis banged out 12 hits, their highest plate production of the young season. Underwood led the way with a single, double and triple and two RBI. Wood had a pair of doubles and two RBI, Carter had two singles and an RBI, Cornish tripled and drove in a run, Torres had a single and an RBI, Miles had a single and two RBI, and Burns and Metts both singled.
Kesleigh Poe started on the mound and went five innings. She gave up one earned run on six hits, walked three and struck out two. Kelsey Parlor pitched the final two innings, not giving up a hit, hitting one and walking one.
In the jayvee game, Wood had a pair of singles and an RBI, Underwood, Burns, Kayleigh Sellers and Caitlyn Banks each had a single and two RBI, Miles, Parlor and Peyton Thigpen each singled, and Hernandez drove in a run.
Burns pitched all five innings, blanking Wayne on two hits, walking none, hitting one and striking out nine.
