Parson-Reid Stadium — By Tommy Purser
At last night’s Jeff Davis-Vidalia basketball game in Vidalia, the school officially christened their new gymnasium as the Parson-Reid Gymnasium after long-time boys coach Ralph Parsons and long-time girls coach Chuck “Chunk” Reid. The christening was saved for last night because the Indians were hosting Jeff Davis High, and former JDHS girls basketball coach Hugh McBride was one of Chunk Reid’s best coaching friends, if not the best coaching friend.
When Reid, who died last spring, became the winningest girls basketball coach in Georgia history, McBride and the JDHS administration honored his accomplishment at a Jeff Davis-Vidalia game in Hazlehurst.
Reid’s family never forgot that act of kindness and will always cherish the friendship Reid and McBride formed over the years.
Hugh was at last night’s game and I know it did his heart good to know that the Reid family so cherishes him that they made sure last night was a special night, not only for the Vidalia folks who loved Coach Reid, but for Coach McBride as well.
