The cooler temperatures the Jeff Davis cross country teams experienced Thursday at the Wayne County Meet #3 helped produce hot times for the JD runners.
Thirteen of the 14 runners ran personal record times as the squads ran their last regular season meet of the year before they host the Region 2AA XC Championship Thursday. The teams have experienced terrible running weather most of the season and both the boys and girls teams have been inconsistent with producing solid team results at meets this year. The cooler weather last week made training a lot easier on the kids and it showed at Wayne. They were a lot fresher and raced much faster at the beginning of the race and were able to hold on to produce some of the fastest times ever by both the boys and girls teams.
On the boys side six of the seven runners ran PR’s, while all seven of the girls ran PR’s including Zoie Marchant who bested her previous best school record by almost 20 seconds to lower the record to 20:27.02.
This week the teams will prepare for the Region 2AA Championship. On the boys side Region 2AA is led by Vidalia with the JD squad close behind and then a solid Toombs County team. The fourth and final state qualifying spot is up for grabs. Bacon, Woodville-Tompkins, and Metter will all battle for that last spot.
On the girls side St. Vincent’s Academy and Jeff Davis are clearly the top two teams with the Vidalia squad the clear favorite to finish third. The fourth and final state qualifying spot could go to all of the remaining teams in the region. The St. Vincent’s team has the slight edge on the Jeff Davis girls as they have beaten Jeff Davis head to head all three times they have seen them this year. However, the Lady Jackets most recent times from the Wayne County meet give them the better times than the Saints squad.
