Lady Jackets host Monticello in 2nd round matchup
Jeff Davis High’s softball team entered the 2019 Georgia High School Association State Tournament Tuesday as the No. 3 seed from Region 2-AA. That put them on the road to meet Screven County in Sylvania, the No. 2 seed from Region 4-AA.
The Lady Jackets swept the Lady Gamecocks in Sylvania 9-1, 8-0.
Jeff Davis will host the second round against Monticello. Monticello, No. 4 seed from Region 8-AA received a first round forfeit win over Booker T. Washington of Atlanta. Washington and South Atlanta were both forced to forfeit their first round playoff games after the two teams met Oct. 2 in a Region 6-AA matchup. During the game, a fight broke out between players and fans from both schools and one man fired a handgun in the air during the melee.
The Atlanta School Board reviewed the situation and ordered both teams to forfeit their playoff games. Washington was a No. 1 seed and South Atlanta was a No. 2 seed.
With the forfeit win, Monticello advances to the second round against the Jeff Davis with a 6-17 record. A No. 5 seed in the region tournament with a 2-5 region mark and a 4-15 overall record, Monticello upset Elbert County (3-4 region, 13-10 overall) to get a berth in the 4-team region finals, finishing fourth.
Screven County was a formidable foe for the Lady Jackets as the Lady Gamecocks posted a 20-6 overall record, finishing second to Harlem, 26-3, in the region tournament.
Screven is ranked 7th in the MaxPreps Class AA poll while Harlem is No. 3.
