Jeff Davis High’s Lady Jackets cruised to a 10-2 victory over Toombs County last week to claim the No. 3 seed out of Region 2-AA in this year’s state championship tournament.
JD spotted the Lady Bulldogs to a 1-0 first inning lead but quickly turned it around, leading 6-1 after four innings. Toombs got back within 6-2 but Jeff Davis pulled away late to win 10-2.
Jeff Davis got two runs in the bottom of the second as Annalese Poole opened with a double and scored as Bianca Torres was safe on an error. Another error moved Torres to third and Fefe Greene singled Torres across the plate.
Dee Wooten, Georgia Roberts and Poole opened the JD third with consecutive singles. A catcher’s error enabled both Wooten and Roberts to score prior to Poole’s single. Two outs later, Tia Cornish singled to score Poole and make it 5-1.
In the fourth, Paige Carter doubled, moved to third on a Wooten fly out, and then scored on a passed ball to up the score to 6-1.
After Toombs got a run in the fifth, the Lady Jackets got it back in the bottom of the inning. Alicia Lilliott doubled and pinch runner Peyton Thigpen came on to run for Lilliott, moving to third on a Torres ground out. Thigpen then scored on a passed ball, making it 7-2.
Jeff Davis closed out the scoring with three runs in the sixth. Fefe Greene singled to left and scored on an error by the left fielder. Carter followed with a double and Wooten and Roberts were both hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carter scored as Poole grounded out to short and pinch runner Breanna Schroeder scored on a Thigpen single as the Lady Jackets won on the 8-run-lead rule.
Carter had a pair of doubles to top the offense. Poole had a double, a single and an RBI, Greene and Cornish both had two singles and an RBI, Lilliott doubled, Thigpen singled in a run, and Wooten and Roberts singled.
Kesleigh Poe was the winning pitcher. She started and went three innings, giving up one run on five hits, walking one and striking out two. Kelsey Parlor earned a save pitching the final three innings. She gave up one run on two hits, walked none and struck out one.
