Four Jackets Are All State

Georgia Dugout Preview Magazine name Jeff Davis High Head Coach Paul Glass and junior shortstop Britt Metts as the Class 2A Coach of the Year and Player of the Year after the Yellow Jackets won the 2019 Class 2A Baseball Championship.
In making the announcement, the magazine said, “Glass guided Jeff Davis to the Class 2A title in what was supposed to be a rebuilding season in Hazlehurst. The Yellow Jackets captured their second state championship in three years.”
With the Jackets losing only one senior from the 2019 team, the prospects for 2020 are bright.
Of Metts, the magazine said, “Metts excelled in everything he did this past season for Jeff Davis to help the Jackets to the state championship. The leadoff hitter provided contact and power at the plate, but his pitching in clutch situations was just as valuable. Metts recorded saves in both Games 2 and 3 to help Jeff Davis defeat Rockmart in the best-of-three state championship series.”
Metts, junior catcher Colby Marchant and junior outfielder/pitcher Caleb Leggett were named to the Georgia Dugout Preview Class AA First Team All State. And most of the First Team players were 2019 opponents of the Yellow Jackets.
Junior pitcher/second baseman Garrison Miles drew an Honorable Mention All State honor, which most Jacket fans would find a slight on the right-hander who led the team with an 11-1 record, and was the winning pitcher in the championship game against Rockmart.
In another perceived slight, while Jeff Davis’ championship team had four All-State honorees, runner-up Rockmart led all schools with eight selections; Thomasville, eliminated in the second round by Bacon County, had six; and Bacon County, eliminated in the third round by Callaway, had five.
