Soccer boys top Berrien County

Jeff Davis boys soccer won against the Berrien County Rebels last Thursday night to advance to the Elite 8 of the state playoffs.
The Yellow Jackets dominated the first half on the defensive and offensive side of the ball. The Yellow Jackets took 21 shots in the first half but could not find a goal. At the half the score was all level 0-0.
The tie was finally broken by senior Hector Huerta in the 56th minute. He took a shot from the top of the 18 yard box and found the back of the net to put JD up 1-0.
In the 72nd minute senior Jose Gonzalez took a free kick that got past the goal keeper to put JD up 2-0.
After a big save from sophomore goal keeper Audiel Plascencia the Yellow Jackets took off on a counter attack and junior Orlando Payan took a shot from inside the box and beat the keeper in the 74th minute to put the Yellow Jackets up 3-0. The score would stay that way and put Jeff Davis into the Elite 8 round.
The Yellow Jackets will travel to Blairsville to take on Union County High School in the 3rd round. JD will be making consecutive trips to the Elite 8 round. JD is looking to change the outcome from last year when they lost 4-0 to Model High School. Both teams are No. 4 seeds and due to the GHSA universal coin flip for like seeds in spring sport playoffs, Jeff Davis will have to travel. The game will be held at Union County High School Wednesday at 6 p.m.
