Great Year For Spring Sports
What a year for spring sports in Yellow Jacket world.
Jeff Davis High sports teams have won four Region 2-AA titles this spring and seven teams have earned berths in the state playoffs, with the boys and girls track teams almost assuredly bringing that total to nine at this Saturday’s sectional track meet.
JDHS Athletic Director Roger Metts was pleased with the success of the school’s spring sports.
“That’s something to be very proud of, for sure,” he said. “It’s a testament to the coaches and the time and effort they’ve put in, and to the kids for the time and effort they’ve put in, too.”
The Jeff Davis High girls and boys tennis teams both won Region 2-AA championships.
While the boys were eliminated from the state playoffs in the second round, the Lady Jackets are in the Final Four.
The girls track team won its seventh consecutive Region 2-AA championship and multiple athletes from both the girls and boys teams earned berths in the state sectional track meet this Saturday with a chance to advance to the GHSA State Track Meet in Rome May 9-11.
And the JDHS baseball team also won the Region 2-AA championship, won in the first round of the state playoffs and hosts Fitzgerald Thursday in the Sweet 16.
Both the girls and boys soccer teams advanced to the state playoffs. While the girls were eliminated in the first round, the boys upset No. 1 seed Dodge County last Friday in Eastman in sudden death to advance to the Sweet 16.
The Region 2-AA golf tournament was played Monday at Willow Lake Golf Club in Metter. Both the Lady Jackets and the Jacket boys finished third to earn berths in the state finals May 20-21 at Oak Mountain Golf Club in Carrollton.
If the track teams perform as expected this Saturday, it will mean all nine spring sports teams qualified for the state playoffs. That may be the first time that’s happened in school history and it surely is the first time in the last 46 springs.
