Cross Country Teams Compete In Florida

The JDHS cross country teams traveled to Florida for the 7th Annual Amelia Island Pirate Invitational Saturday. The event was hosted by Fernandina Beach High School at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club.
It was a unique event for the team in several ways. First, the race was on a golf course which provided a flat and fast course. Second, the race had a “Clash Start” in which the teams racing are split into two opposing starting lines facing each other and race to the first turn on the start. Third, the meet brought in some of the best teams from the Jacksonville and First Coast area, as well as, Spencer County High School of Kentucky.
Hector Huerta led the JDHS boys to a 3rd place finish. Riley Walters led the JDHS girls to a second place finish while breaking the previous school record held by Brenda Franco. Franco’s record was 21:55 set in 2017 at the Region 2AA Championship. Walters lowered that mark to 21:43.
The coaching staff was pleased with the efforts of both teams. After coming off Fall Break and missing additional days for practice due to Hurricane Michael, the coaches were worried the teams might be a little sluggish. But several of the boys ran season bests or personal record times and all the girls ran personal record times. All in all it was a great meet for the JDXC squads.
The teams will compete at Wayne County Oct. 17th for the last meet of the regular season.
