Lady Jackets Play For Title

Jeff Davis and Vidalia will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. in Hazlehurst for the 2018 Region 2-AA Softball Championship.
The Lady Jackets swept Metter Monday, 3-1 and 10-8, to advance to Thursday’s region finals. Vidalia swept Bacon County 3-1 and 13-5 to get their berth in the finals.
The Lady Jackets enter the game with a 19-9 record and the Lady Indians are also 19-9. In their two regular season meetings, Jeff Davis prevailed 6-3 Aug. 23 in Hazlehurst and 5-4 Sept. 18 in Vidalia.
At 4 p.m. Thursday in Hazlehurst, Bacon County and Metter will meet to determine the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds from Region 2-AA in the state playoffs.
In Monday’s first game, the Lady Jackets got all three of their runs in the third inning on a 3-run homer by Dee Wooten. Paige Carter walked and Karli Williams singled to put two on for Wooten’s at bat. Amillian Clements came on to pinch run for Williams and Wooten promptly drove Carter and Clements home in front of her.
Metter’s only run was unearned and came in the sixth thanks to throwing error.
Both teams managed only three hits as Marlee Colson singled to add to Williams’ and Wooten’s hits.
Lanie Scott picked up the win on the mound, giving up the unearned run on three hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
In the second game, the Lady Jackets got 12 hits. After trailing 3-2 after two innings, Jeff Davis worked to a 10-4 lead through 5 1/2 innings. Metter scored four in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score more respectable.
Williams led the offense with two doubles, a single and four RBI. Scott singled, doubled and drove in three runs, Colson had two singles and an RBI, Wooten tripled and drove in two runs, Carter had a double, and FeFe Green, Jakhia Green and Karlie Watson each had a single.
Lindsey White was the winning pitcher. She went five innings, giving up two earned runs on nine hits, walking four and striking out one. Scott earned a save pitching the final two innings. The four runs Metter got off Scott in the sixth were all unearned as the JD defense was hit with uncharacteristic errors. Scott gave up four hits, walked none and struck out three.
