800 Runners Compete In Hazlehurst

The Jeff Davis Cross Country programs hosted the Second Annual Southern Georgia Cross Country Championship last Thursday, with 17 middle school and 27 high school teams from all over south Georgia. Over 800 MS and HS runners competed. Teams as far as Brunswick, Warner Robins, and Thomasville traveled to compete in what is quickly becoming one of the state’s premier meets south of the gnat line.
The middle school boys 3200 meter race was paced by William Kellam of West Laurens with a time of 12:02, while in the girls race Savannah Goode of Richmond Hill MS led the pack with a time of 14:48. Both those runners also led their teams to overall victories as West Laurens took the boys title and Richmond Hill the girls.
The high school boys 5K race was paced by Paul Kellam of West Laurens with a time of 17:44 and Mia Colucci of Brunswick paced the girls with a time of 21:37.
The high school races produced champions in small, medium, and large school divisions.
The small school division was made up of teams from GISA and GHSA 1A Public and Private schools. The small school boys division was won by Atkinson County and the girls division by Telfair County.
The medium school division was made up of schools from GHSA AA. The Jeff Davis squads won both the boys and girls titles in this division.
The large school division was made of schools from GHSA 3A through 7A and Glynn Academy took both the boys and girls titles.
One the unique features of the meet is the Grand Champion which is the combined scores of boys and girls. In the middle school division the Grand Champion was Richmond Hill with a low score of 100. While the high school Grand Champion was Jeff Davis with a low score of 184, just 16 points better than Glynn Academy.
The Jeff Davis Cross Country coaching staff and runners thank the volunteers who helped with the meet. Without them the event could not be possible.
