Lady Jackets rout Bryan County
Jeff Davis High’s softball team took a pair of 15-0, 3-inning victories over Bryan County last Thursday in Hazlehurst as they rebounded from a 5-1 loss to Bacon County Tuesday in Hazlehurst.
In the Lady Jackets’ softball tournament over the weekend, Jeff Davis fell 9-5 to Pinewood Christian as errors led to seven unearned runs by Pinewood. In the other tournament game, the Lady Jackets downed Wheeler County 13-2 in five innings.
The Lady Jackets couldn’t get the bats working against Bacon.
They scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning but couldn’t get any more runs across the plate. They carried the 1-0 lead into the fifth inning when the Lady Raiders went up 2-1 with a pair of unearned runs and then Bacon added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Karli Williams drove in FeFe Green with a first inning double for the Lady Jackets’ only run. Green had a double, and Bianca Torres, Jakhia Green and Caroline Waters each had a single.
Lindsey White took the loss, despite blanking Bacon through the first four innings before errors allowed Bacon to score their two unearned runs in the fifth. She gave up three hits, walked three and fanned three. Lanie Scott pitched the final two innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits, walking two and striking out none.
The loss was the second Region 2-AA loss for Jeff Davis as they fell to 6-2 in the region.
The two wins over Bryan pushed the Lady Jackets’ Region 2-AA mark to 8-2.
In the first game, Jeff Davis spread its 15 runs over three innings. In the second game, they scored all 15 runs in the second inning.
In the opener, Scott had her best day at the plate of the year, going 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and two RBI. Dee Wooten homered and singled and drove in three runs, Williams tripled, singled and drove inn three runs, Waters and Allie Lytle both singled in a pair of runs, Marlee Colson, Jakhia Green, Georgia Roberts and FeFe Green all singled, and Amillian Clements had an RBI.
Scott was the winning pitcher, hurling a no-hitter. She walked one and struck out three as she only faced 10 batters in the three innings.
In the second victory, Colson had a double, a single and three RBI, and Waters had a pair of singles and four RBI. Torres had two singles and an RBI, FeFe Green drove in a pair of runs with a double, Williams singled in two runs, Wooten and Alison Herrington each singled in a run, Clements singled and Karlie Watson had an RBI.
Kesleigh Poe threw a 2-hitter to pick up the win. She walked one and struck out two.
Pinewood got all nine of its runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings as errors led to JD facing a 9-1 deficit. The Lady Jackets battled back in the fifth and sixth innings of the 6-inning game but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 8-run deficit.
Williams had a pair of singles, a double and three RBI to pace the offense. FeFe Green hit a solo homer and singled. Wooten drove in a run with a double, and Paige Carter, Herrington and Colson added singles.
Scott took the loss. She gave up two earned runs on eight hits, walked one, hit two batters and struck out three.
The Lady Jackets had few problems with Wheeler. Williams again led the offense with a triple, a double, a single, and three RBI. Colson had two doubles and two RBI, FeFe Green had a double and a single, Wooten had a single, a sacrifice and an RBI, Torres had a single and an RBI, Watson had a sacrifice and an RBI, and Herrington drove in two runs.
White was the winning pitcher. She gave up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three.
