Sheeler Wins Shot Put Title
Yellow Jacket senior Harrison Sheeler was the only Jeff Davis athlete to take a first place medal in the 2018 Class AA State Track and Field Meet last week in Albany.
Wheeler set a school record and personal best — twice — in the shot put and won the title with a throw of 52-3.
The next closest competitor was C.J. (Caesar) Wright of Screven County who finished second with a best throw of 50-10. Sheeler and Wright have competed against one another in track, wrestling and weightlifting since middle school and have become friends over the years. They were the only two Class AA throwers to top the 50-ft. mark at the state meet.
As a team, the Jackets finished 7th with 14 points as Sheeler earned 10 of those points with his first place shot put finish. Cedric King got the other four points with a fifth place finish in the long jump, with a jump of 21-11.
The Lady Jackets failed to defend their 2017 state championship but they performed well, finishing fourth. The JD girls were led by Keiana Littleton who finished second in the 100 meter dash in 12.25 seconds, won fourth in the 200 meter dash, and ran a leg on the 5th place 4 x 100 relay team. Other relay team members were Ariana Harmon, Kendriana McDuffie and Jasmine Johnson.
McDuffie finished fifth in the 300 meter hurdles, Madison Brown tied for sixth in the pole vault, Daneshia Wooten won third in the discus and Mariah Gibbs got fifth, and Wooten and Gibbs finished 8th and 4th respectively in the shot put.
While the Lady Jackets were the Region 2-AA champions, fellow 2-AA member Vidalia won the state title at Albany. Elbert County won the boys title.
