Jackets split with Bryan County

Jeff Davis High’s baseball team split a pair of games with Bryan County last week, topping the Redskins 3-2 Tuesday in Pembroke and falling 6-3 Friday in Hazlehurst.
Friday’s loss dropped the Jackets out of a tie with Benedictine for the top spot in Region 2-AA. The Jackets played the Cadets yesterday (Tuesday) in Hazlehurst and will play them again Friday in Savannah. The Jackets are now 15-8 overall and 7-3 in the region.
Tuesday’s game against Bryan was deadlocked at 1-1 through five innings before the Jackets pushed two runs across in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. The Redskins scored a single run in the seventh but could get no more.
Ross Rush had his best outing of the year on the mound as the left-hander hurled a three-hitter and did not give up an earned run. He pitched the first 6 2/3 innings and reliever Chandler Davenport came on in the seventh with two outs and retired the only batter he faced to earn a save.
The Jackets out-hit the Redskins 8-3. Alex Sanders and Davenport both had a pair of singles, Colby Marchant doubled and had an RBI, Hamp Hayes doubled, Seth Graham and Jashaun Kirby both had singles, Cade Walters had an RBI and Britt Metts added a sacrifice.
Friday in Hazlehurst, the Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. But Bryan scored a trio of runs in the third and sixth innings to lead 6-2. A lone JD run in the bottom of the sixth accounted for the final score.
Kirby had the hot bat for the Jackets, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Sanders had a pair of singles, Davenport had a single and a sacrifice, and Graham added a single.
Sanders started on the mound and went four innings. He gave up only one earned run on seven hits, walked one, hit a batter and struck out two. Davenport pitched the final three innings, giving up three runs on two hits, no walks, two hit batters and two strikeouts.
