4th grader band tryouts

Students in the 4th grade at Jeff Davis Elementary School will be given the opportunity this week to try-out instruments and join the award-winning Jeff Davis band program.
The recruiting concert was held recently in the ES gym with the current 5th grade beginning band directed by Dennis Kirby, and the 7th and 8th grade bands directed by Bradley Reid. During the concert, the main six instruments played in the 5th grade band (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and baritone) were demonstrated so students would know better what they are and what they sound like.
May 3, 4th graders will be called during the school day to go to the music room and try instruments, regardless if they sign up for band or not. That afternoon, parents of the students who desire to sign up for 5th grade band will meet with representatives from O’Malley’s Music Store in Douglas, where they will make arrangements to lease (or buy) the instrument of their child’s dreams. The sign-up time will run from 3-7 p.m. If unable to make that meeting, contact Mr. Kirby at the school to make other arrangements.
The only cost to join the band (other than getting your child’s instrument) is a $30 band fee, which covers buying their shirt and their method book. The $30 can be raised by the child (and is encouraged to do so) by selling a box of chocolate bars at the beginning of next school year. In addition, each student that signs up will have the opportunity to travel to Wild Adventures theme park in Valdosta as a reward (and that cost is paid by the band).
