In July, 2019, Glen Solomon, of Jeff Davis County, who was a well-known Southeast Georgia sportsman and author, gave a manuscript he was writing to his friend Bill Prince for consideration for publishing. Glen was a very successful freelance writer with Georgia Outdoor News magazine. Before a decision on the manuscript could be made, Glen sadly passed away Aug. 16, 2019, at just 52 years of age.
Glen’s friends and family decided to push forward with the publishing of Glen’s book, Hunting on the Fly which was released in December with Glen’s widow Cindy of Hazlehurst benefitting from the proceeds. The team that had Glen’s book published paid the expenses as a tribute to their friend and a gift to his widow. Several of the team, including Hazlehurst residents Brice Nelms and Bill Prince, will speak at the March 5 meeting of the Friends of the Jeff Davis Library and Cindy and members of Glen’s family will be present to sign copies of the book.
Glen’s book is available for purchase at Googe’s in Hazlehurst and several other businesses in SE Georgia, from thebowmanco.com, and other online book sellers such as Amazon.com.
The public is invited in sharing the book signing event at the Jeff Davis County library at 7 p.m. March 5.

  • Spring Fling Family Fun Day
    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    Mar-28-20

Several community entities and organizations are coming together to host a Spring Fling Family Fun Day March 28, at the Jeff Davis Fairgrounds from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
The event will be for citizens of Jeff Davis County hosted by the City of Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis County Commission, Chamber of Commerce, Development Authority, Jeff Davis Hospital, Jeff Davis Family Connection, Jeff Davis Library and Jeff Davis School System.
As families arrive, they will be able to fill out their census online. After filling out the census form they will receive three free tickets per person counted from their family.  The tickets can be used for carnival rides, bouncy houses and food at the event.  Additional tickets may be purchased.
“It is absolutely critical that we increase the Census Count for 2020,” said Andrea Taylor, Chairman of the Complete Count Committee. “Only about 50% of the people in Jeff Davis County have been counted in the last censuses, which means we are receiving only 50% of funding allocated for schools, infrastructure and other state and federal programs.”
According to Taylor, it is estimated that each person counted equates to $2,500 per year in funding, which means over the 10-year period before the next census, Jeff Davis County will lose approximately $25,000 for each person that is not counted in Census 2020.
Volunteers are needed for the event. If interested in volunteering, contact Andrea Taylor at the Chamber of Commerce at 912-375-4543.
