Mark Aug. 9 on your calendar and get your tickets now for the next local Hunting Heritage Banquet.
The Jeff Davis County chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will host their annual banquet at The Cotton Patch Extreme, 495 Towns Bluff Rd., Hazlehurst, to raise money for projects that conserve wildlife and preserve Georgia’s hunting heritage.
“This is the chapter’s 2nd year hosting our banquet, and we look forward to having another award winning event,” said Bobby Sears. Last year’s event won the chapter two state awards and one national award. “It’s the best opportunity in town to meet other people who care about conservation while enjoying good food, good music and good fun.”
Dinner starts at 7 p.m., but arrive at 6 to enjoy a social hour before the banquet begins.
Families can play games and enter raffles to win guns including Benelli, Glock, Kimber, Remington, and Winchester. There also will be silent and live auctions for exclusive framed art, guns, collectibles, sculptures home furnishings and more. Attendees that bring a back to school supply item will receive a $20 raffle ticket.
Corporate sponsor tables that seat six people cost $500 and include a corporate sponsor gift. Couple’s tickets are $100 and single tickets are $60. All tickets include admission, dinner and a single one-year NWTF membership.
Local and state NWTF chapters host thousands of similar events nationwide each year to raise funds that help conserve wildlife and habitat, and introduce new people to the outdoors. Many families enjoy hunting together and pass traditions on from one generation to another. Hunting also is important for the health of the nation’s wildlife and habitat because hunters fund conservation.
For information about the banquet, contact Bobby Sears at 912-347-1512 and/or bobby@jebschokes.com.

The Hazlehurst City Council’s regularly scheduled meeting.

Time to hit the woods in pursuit of Ole Bushytail! Squirrel hunting season provides the first opportunity of the year to start replenishing that meat in the freezer, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division. Unlike some big game hunts, the pursuit of squirrels often involves more action for energetic youth, providing a greater level of interaction with the outdoors.
Beginning Aug. 15 and lasting through Feb. 29, 2020, hunters can pursue both gray and fox squirrels. The maximum daily bag limit is 12 per hunter.
“Hunting squirrel is part of a significant cultural hunting tradition in Georgia,” said John Bowers, chief of the Wildlife Resources Division Game Management Section. “It’s fun and doesn’t cost a lot to get started, and really gives you a great opportunity to introduce a young person or someone new to hunting.”
Georgia’s wildlife management areas (WMA) offer access to nearly one million acres of hunting opportunity, and squirrel hunting is allowed on WMAs at specified times during the statewide squirrel season (https://georgiawildlife.com/locations/wrd). Hunters are advised to check the current hunting regulations for specific WMA dates and info (www.gohuntgeorgia.com/hunting/regulations).
The two species
Both gray and fox squirrels can be found throughout Georgia. The gray squirrel, abundant in both rural and urban areas, is the most common species. Though mostly associated with hardwood forests, grays also can be found in mixed pine/hardwood forests. Predominantly gray, with white under parts, gray squirrels appear more slender-bodied than fox squirrels, weighing anywhere from 12 ounces to 1.5 pounds.
Fox squirrels have several color phases, varying from silver-gray with a predominantly black head, to solid black, to a light buff or brown color tinged with reddish-yellow. Generally larger than grays, fox squirrels range in weight from one pound to nearly three, and are more closely associated with mature pine and mixed pine/hardwood habitats, and especially in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions.

Lecturer, author and Douglas native Dr. G. Wayne Clough will present an author talk and sign copies of his latest book, Things New and Strange: A Southerner’s Journey Through the Smithsonian Collections, Aug. 15 at 4 p.m., in the William S. Smith Library on the Douglas campus of South Georgia State College. The program is cosponsored by South Georgia State College, the William S. Smith Library and Douglas – Coffee County Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Clough’s family was from the Snipesville area of Jeff Davis County.
Things New and Strange chronicles a research quest undertaken by Dr. Clough, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution born in the South. Soon after retiring from the Smithsonian, Clough decided to see what the Smithsonian collections could tell him about South Georgia, where he had spent most of his childhood in the 1940s and 1950s. The investigations that followed, which began as something of a quixotic scavenger hunt, expanded as Clough discovered that the collections had many more objects and documents from South Georgia than he had imagined. These objects illustrate important aspects of southern culture and history and also inspire reflections about how South Georgia has changed over time.
Clough’s discoveries ― animal, plant, fossil, and rock specimens, along with cultural artifacts and works of art ― not only serve as a springboard for reflections about the region and its history, they also bring Clough’s own memories of his boyhood in Douglas back to life. Clough interweaves memories of his own experiences, such as hair-raising escapes from poisonous snakes and selling boiled peanuts for a nickel a bag at the annual auction of the tobacco crop, with anecdotes from family lore, which launches an exploration of his forebears and their place in South Georgia history. In following his engaging and personal narrative, we learn how nonspecialists can use museum archives and how family, community, and natural history are intertwined.
Things New and Strange is published by the University of Georgia Press. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. The library is located at 100 West College Park Drive in Douglas. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact SGSC Vice President for Institutional Advancement Walda Kight at (912) 260-4274 or by email at walda.kight@sgsc.edu.
