Political Forum

The Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Chamber of Commerce and Jeff Davis Farm Bureau will host a political forum Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Hazlehurst Civic Center & Golf Course. The forum will feature candidates for the upcoming election for City of Hazlehurst Mayor and City Council.
Candidates will have the ability to introduce themselves, tell why they are running for office, why they are qualified to be an elected official in the City of Hazlehurst and will then be asked a series of questions and will each have two minutes to respond.
“The Chamber encourages voters to get to know the candidates running for election in order to be more educated before going to the polls,” said Sonya Miller, Chamber President. “It’s important to know where the candidates stand on issues that affect our City.”
The public is invited. There is no charge for admission.

Proceeds from this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk/run will go towards treatment costs for Angie Sellers. She is a member of the community, a teacher in the local school system and she still has joy as she fights breast cancer. Participants can sign up for $20 at www.hazlehurstmusicfestival.com.
The run will be Oct. 12 at 9 a.m. and the Hazlehurst Music Festival will be 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. featuring all day music, shopping and games for all ages.

Saturday morning a Breast Cancer Awareness 8K Walk/Run will begin at 8 a.m. The music fest begins at 10 a.m.
There will be music, food, arts and crafts, games and all day fun for the entire family.

Hillcrest Baptist Church will observe their third annual 2019 Youth Raffle and Big Buck Contest Oct. 12.
First place deer is $500 and free mount; second place, $300 and third place, $200; bonus: first place wild hog, $200 and second place, $100. Ages 15 and under – youngest male and female to enter a deer wins a prize. Boone and Crockett regulations will be used to score – must bring in a whole deer. Scoring will be completed at Hillcrest Baptist Church all day until 9 p.m.
Also up to $5,000 in door prizes and you must be present to win. You do not have to enter a deer to win door prizes. Door prizes begin at 8:30 p.m. Grand prize drawings include lifetime hunting license and a Stoeger Nicket Plated 22 rifle.

Coach Anson Callaway

Coach Anson Callaway of Lyons will be the featured speaker at the Oct. 17 meeting of the Friends of the Library.
Coach Callway has written a book, “A Rich Poor Man,” about his many years of serving with the Lyons Recreation Department and what it took to have the Anson Callway Complex at Partin Park in Lyons completed. If you have ever been over to Partin Park you know what a great facility that has served their community and numerous baseball players and families from all over the area.
Coach Callaway’s motto is a great one, “Dream Big, Work Hard, and Good Things Will Happen.” That applies to everything, whether in sports or everyday life.
Coach Callaway said, “When I was twelve years old, I told my daddy what I wanted to do in life; it was to play ball. For sixty years, I did that. Thanks to all the people who were a big part of this journey. Thanks for believing in me. It was a lot of fun!”

The Jeff Davis County Board of Elections is proposing to reopen the former polling site for the Ocmulgee II Precinct, located at the Jeff Davis County Fire Station on Kirkland Still Road.
The Elections Board will hold two hearings on the proposal, on Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. and Oct. 31 at 5:15 p.m. Both hearings will be held in the Board of Elections office at the Jeff Davis County Courthouse.
Anyone objecting to the reopening can do so in writing, stating the reason for the objections and file it with Jeff Davis County Election Supervisor Christy N. Riner, 14 Jeff Davis Street, Suite 107, Hazlehurst, GA 31539. The deadline for submitting is Oct. 21 at 4:30 p.m.

Dementia Friends

The Heart of Georgia Altamaha Area Agency on Aging is hosting a “Dementia Friends” information session Oct. 30 and is looking for local people to join in learning about dementia and helping people who are living with it in our community.
Dementia Friends is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way we think, talk and act about the disease. The Dementia Friends session helps you learn about dementia and the small ways you can help.
The one hour session will be at Toombs County Community Center, 107 Old Airport Road, Vidalia from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
Having volunteered to be a Dementia Friends Champion, Lisa Livingston and Lisa Wolfson are now delivering Dementia Friends Sessions to people across the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Area Agency on Aging’s 17 county region. They became involved in the Dementia Friends project as a way to increase community awareness of the needs to persons living with dementia.
