Dove Season Opens

What are your opening day plans? Georgia’s dove hunting season opens Sept. , according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD).
“One of the best times of the year to introduce someone to hunting is during dove season,” said John W. Bowers, Chief of WRD Game Management. “Georgia offers more than 50 public dove fields, including opportunities on private land made available to the public through a U.S. Department of Agriculture program called the Voluntary Public Access/Habitat Incentive Program.”
The official 2018-2019 dove seasons are Sept. 1-16, Oct. 13-31 and Nov. 22-Jan. 15. Shooting hours are noon until sunset on opening day (Sept. 1) and one-half hour before sunrise to sunset for the remainder of the season dates.
More Dove Season Tips and Information:
• Dove Field Forecast (https://georgiawildlife.com/hunting/dove): The dove field forecast identifies available crops and anticipates hunting conditions for opening day.
• Regulations Quick Review: The daily bag limit is 15 doves per hunter. Collared doves may be taken and do not count toward your daily limit. Any auto-loading or other repeating shotgun must be plugged to hold no more than three shot shells while hunting doves. And, as always, hunters must obtain permission from landowners before hunting on private property.
• Report Banded Doves: In 2003, the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Research Division and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in cooperation with several states, including Georgia, initiated an ongoing dove banding project. Hunters can participate in this conservation effort by examining harvested doves for leg bands and reporting band numbers to the USFWS at www.reportband.gov.
• Private Field Plans? Make Sure Field is Legal: Check out the online brochure, “Dove Hunting and Agricultural Practices in Georgia,” available at http://georgiawildlife.com/migratory-bird-info.
• Licenses Needed: Hunters age 16 years of age and older need to have a hunting license and a Georgia Migratory Bird Stamp. This stamp is how Georgia participates in the federal Harvest Information Program (HIP). Some licenses allow the license holder to get the Georgia Migratory Bird Stamp at no cost. Hunters may purchase licenses online at www.GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com, by phone at 1-800-366-2661 or at license vendor locations (list of vendors available online).
For more information on dove hunting in Georgia, visit http://georgiawildlife.com/regulations.

The Church of God on Broxton Hwy., next to Pineland Personal Care Home, will have a Sunday School Outreach event, Saturday, Sept. 1 from 4-7:30 p.m.
The theme of the event is “You Are What You Are.” There will be food, games, and service. For more information call Kathy Jeffcoat at 539-8590.

The American Red Cross urges people of all races and ethnicities to give blood to help ensure a diverse blood supply for patients in need.
The vast majority of blood types fall into one of the major ABO groups. However, some blood types are unique to certain racial and ethnic groups, so a diverse blood supply is important to meeting the medical needs of an increasingly diverse patient population.
As a thank-you, those who come to donate blood or platelets through Sept. 30 will receive a coupon via email for a free haircut at participating Sport Clips locations. More information is available at RedCrossBlood.org/sport-clips.
The next blood drive in Jeff Davis County will be Sept. 18, 2-7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church school building.

Jeff Davis Elementary will hold its Annual Title I meeting Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. in the lunchroom. All stakeholders are encouraged to attend.

The Region 2-AA softball playoffs begin today (Wednesday) and will last a week.
Wednesday’s games pit No. 5 seed Swainsboro vs. No. 8 seed St. Vincent’s Academy and No. 6 seed Bryan County against No. 7 seed Toombs County in single game playoffs.
Thursday, No. 3 seed Bacon County will host the lowest seed advancing and No. 4 seed Metter will host the highest seed advancing, both in best-of-3 series.
Next Monday, play begins with a pair of best-of-3 series, No. 1 seed Jeff Davis hosting the lowest seed advancing and No. 2 seed Vidalia hosting the highest seed advancing. The games in Hazlehurst will be at 4 and 6 p.m. and the if-game will be Tuesday at 6.
Play winds up next Thursday. The winners of the Monday-Tuesday series will play one game for the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the state playoffs. And the losers will play one game for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.
Both of next Thursday’s games will be played in Hazlehurst.
As the regular season games came to an end, Jeff Davis, Vidalia and Bacon County each had 10-2 region records. Jeff Davis’ losses came to Bacon, Bacon’s losses came to Vidalia and Vidalia’s losses came to Jeff Davis, so there was no head-to-head tie-breaker. The next tie breaker used the least number of runs allowed by each school in games against the three teams tied, with the team giving up the most runs eliminated and the other two teams seeded by head-to-head competition.
Jeff Davis had given up 16 runs, Vidalia 17, and Bacon 18. That would eliminate Bacon, leaving Jeff Davis and Vidalia. Since the Lady Jackets defeated the Lady Indians in both games, the Lady Jackets were awarded the No. 1 seed.
Finals Region 2-AA Standings
Region Overall
Jeff Davis 12-2 17-9
Vidalia 12-2 17-9
Bacon County 12-2 17-6
Metter 7-7 8-15
Swainsboro 5-9 8-12
Bryan County 4-10 10-14
Toombs County 4-10 7-12
St. Vincent’s 0-14 5-16

Yuri Lopez will share her testimony Sunday, Sept. 30, on how a small box helped change her life. The event will be held at Fathers House at Because He Lives Ministries, 194 East Jarman St., (Hwy. 341), Hazlehurst.
Growing up in an orphanage in Honduras meant Juri Lopez was separated from her family and had to care for the younger children around her instead of being cared for herself. Yuri received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift at the age of six, which included a picture of the girl who has sent the box, and a note which read, “Jesus love you, and I love you too.” In later years when Yuri could bear her hardship no longer, that note provided the encouragement she needed at a critical point in her life. Yuri’s path led to America since and today she serves with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Come and hear about God’s love in her life as she shares her testimony.
