The Jeff Davis High School boys soccer team defeated Fitzgerald in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs last week 6-4 to advance to the Sweet 16. Moises Briceno led the victory with three goals while Hector Huerta, Mario Aguirre and Danny Acuna scored one goal each. The victory improved the Jackets’ record to 14-5. Today (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. Jeff Davis plays Dodge County in Eastman. This is the second time in program history the squad has reached the Sweet 16.

Blood collections planned in May in Jeff Davis County are May 11, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Jeff Davis High School, and May 15, 2-7 p.m., at the First Baptist Church School building.

Tri-County CASA will host its first Zombie Run May 12 at Doyle’s Obstacle Course in Baxley. The event is open to ages 12 and up. Tickets are on sale and those who sign up before April 20 will receive a free Zombie Run T-shirt. CASA is selling two types of tickets: zombie and runner. Runners will be provided a flag football belt and must attempt to make it through a 5k run filled with obstacles and hordes of zombies, while keeping at least one of their flags. Zombies will be tasked with “infecting” runners by stealing as many flags possible. At the end of the race, runners who successfully complete the course and zombies who manage to steal flags will be entered into a drawing to win a prize. Zombie tickets are $20 and runner tickets are $25. There are a limited number of each available. Proceeds go to Tri-County CASA. Hazel worked at Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, Tenn., Kansas City Youth For Christ TV Department, Shawnee Mission, Kan., and taught college English at UAB and Greenville Technical College. Hazel is a member of Christ Church Choir which has recorded albums and traveled internationally. She is proficient in French and is studying Spanish. Hazel has gone on mission trips and plans to travel July and October in Costa Rica and Italy. She is raising money for the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica missions and aims to travel to Haiti and France in 2019 and Japan in 2020.

Tri-County CASA will host its first Zombie Run May 12 at Doyle’s Obstacle Course in Baxley. The event is open to ages 12 and up. Tickets are on sale and those who sign up before April 20 will receive a free Zombie Run T-shirt. CASA is selling two types of tickets: zombie and runner. Runners will be provided a flag football belt and must attempt to make it through a 5k run filled with obstacles and hordes of zombies, while keeping at least one of their flags. Zombies will be tasked with “infecting” runners by stealing as many flags possible. At the end of the race, runners who successfully complete the course and zombies who manage to steal flags will be entered into a drawing to win a prize. Zombie tickets are $20 and runner tickets are $25. There are a limited number of each available. Proceeds go to Tri-County CASA. The Hazlehurst Police Department will sponsor a movie fundraising event May 11 and 12 at the Jeff Davis High School auditorium. Learn what law enforcement officers experience following an officer-involved shooting with a special airing of the award-winning documentary “Officer Involved.” The film offers insight into officer-involved shooting from the perspective of law enforcement. Later, learn more from local law enforcement and other First Responders, as they talk about the realities of the work they do. The event is designed to raise awareness and serve as a fundraiser to acquire a K9. Free popcorn and drink will be available. A freewill donation will be collected. The May 11 event is by invitation only and will run from 6-8 p.m. May 12 is a public event and will also run from 6-8 p.m.
Hazel Tanner Deason will be in concert May 12 at 7 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Hazel began singing at age seven. She traveled, sang and spoke throughout the southeast and sang as a regular on KYFC-TV 50 “Something Beautiful” program. She was a member of college choirs, a church trio and was a soloist. Hazel graduated from Jeff Davis High School in 1965, earned her BA at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a major in communication studies and a minor in music, and earned her MA in English Literature and pedagogy. Hazel worked at Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, Tenn., Kansas City Youth For Christ TV Department, Shawnee Mission, Kan., and taught college English at UAB and Greenville Technical College. Hazel is a member of Christ Church Choir which has recorded albums and traveled internationally. She is proficient in French and is studying Spanish. Hazel has gone on mission trips and plans to travel July and October in Costa Rica and Italy. She is raising money for the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica missions and aims to travel to Haiti and France in 2019 and Japan in 2020.

This week, Jeff Davis High School announced the date(s) and time(s) for the 2018 commencement exercises. The ceremony will be held at the Jeff Davis High football stadium and is scheduled for May 25 at 7 p.m. Should weather not permit beginning the ceremony at 7, it will be pushed back to 8:30. If the weather is still not clear at 8:30, additional times are set up for Saturday and Sunday, May 26-27 and the ceremony will be held at the first time at which the weather is clear. They are as follows: Saturday, May 26, 9 a.m., 7 p.m., 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 3 p.m., 7 p.m. If raining at 7 p.m. on May 27, graduation will be held in the high school gymnasium. Seniors will be given tickets and admission will be by ticket only.
Ride Right Roughstock Arena will present Extreme Bull Challenge Bullride to raise funds to benefit 4-year-old Cayley Anderson of Hazlehurst. The event will be held at the Ride Right Roughstock Arena in Ambrose May 26 at 7 p.m. Cayley, the daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Anderson, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a condition that causes the muscles to be weak and deteriorate over time. Sitting up is a challenge for her. Cayley must use a wheelchair so her parents are renovating their home to suit her needs. She wants a handicap swing to play outside. She is receiving spinal injections and physical therapy to treat the weakness and enable her to sit up on her own. With therapy, medications and determination she hopes to be able to walk. The Three Rivers community band will perform a Memorial Day concert Sunday at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary at Hazlehurst First Methodist Church. The public is invited, especially veterans and their families. Come enjoy an hour of great patriotic music. Admission, as always, is free. In its eighth year, the group features musicians from nine surrounding counties. Founded and conducted by John Reed, the group performs concert and jazz music throughout southeast Georgia.
The Jeff Davis County Veterans Association will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony May 28 at 10 a.m. at Veterans Square Park on Tallahassee Street to honor veterans who lost their lives in defense of America’s freedoms. The keynote speaker is State Senator Blake Tillery, who represents Georgia’s 19th District, which includes Jeff Davis County. Tillery was elected to the State Senate in 2016, and serves on the Appropriations Committee, Judiciary Committee, Economic Development and Tourism Committee, and State Institutions and Property Committee. Prior to his election, he was chairman of the Toombs County Commission and served on the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha Regional Commission, the Regional Workforce Investment Board, the Board of the Toombs County Boys and Girls Club, and the Vidalia Kiwanis Club Board of Directors. He co-chaired the Leadership Toombs-Montgomery program for the Toombs-Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. Named as a Georgia Trend 40 Under 40 honoree in 2013, Tillery is a graduate of the Leadership Georgia Class of 2015, a member of the Conservative Policy Leadership Institute, and a graduate of Republican Leadership for Georgia. Tillery graduated from the University of Georgia in 2006 with a degree in International Affairs and from the University of Georgia School of Law in 2010 with a Juris Doctorate. Currently he is managing partner at Smith and Tillery, P.C. in Vidalia. He is married to Dr. Ashlee Nicole Tillery of Wayne County. The couple resides in Vidalia. During the ceremony, names of veterans who lost their lives in combat will be read and a moment of silence observed, followed by special events and music presented by Steve Underwood, Steve Land, John Reed, and Dustin Hutto.
