Jeff Davis Elementary invites parents to Georgia Milestones Night Feb. 1. A short presentation will begin 5:30 in the lunchroom. After the presentation, the parents will go to the classroom to learn valuable tips to help their child be successful on the Georgia Milestones. Visit the book fair while there. Forever Young, the senior adult group of Hazlehurst First United Methodist Church meets Thursday, Feb. 8, for their monthly outing. Jeff Davis Hospital, a not-for-profit critical access hospital in Hazlehurst, has been awarded a USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Loan to provide appropriate funding for a 10 bed inpatient adult psychiatric facility. The project involves approximately 8,500 square feet of new construction that connects to the existing hospital which aids in the patients integrated care continuum. The program will add over 15 new jobs locally. This facility will provide much needed behavioral health services to the region, services for which patients currently must obtain a significant distance away. The facility will address many of the mental disorders which affect the adult population including, depression, anxiety disorders, suicidal tendencies, drug and alcohol dependency, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. A ground-breaking ceremony will be held Feb. 16 at 11:30 at 163 S. Tallahassee Street in Hazlehurst. The anticipated opening date will be Oct. 1, 2018.

African Americans in the Military, come and celebrate Black History event, Sunday, Feb. 18, 3 p.m. at Bennett Tabernacle Holiness Church, 26 Martin Luther King Blvd., Hazlehurst. The theme will be African Americans in the Military – men, women, active and past. The event is sponsored by The Community League Inc.
A recent biography of Lumber City author Brainard Cheney will be the subject of a book program at Towns Bluff Park Feb. 18 near Hazlehurst at 6:30 p.m. Presenting the program will be Stephen Whigham, who has republished Mr. Cheney’s four novels and published several books about him. Mr. Cheney’s books are historical fiction, all related to the Dodge and Telfair county area, circa 1870-1945. Mr. Whigham grew up in Eastman and graduated from Dodge County High School. Both of his parents were Dodge County natives. He received a History degree from Georgia Southern University and later attended the University of South Carolina, receiving Masters and Specialist degrees in Library Science. He retired from Ocmulgee Regional Library System after working in the library field for more than 30 years. Whigham’s publishing company, MMJW BookHouse, has re-published Chaney’s novels in hardcover, paperback and ebook versions. MMJW has also published two literary biographies of Cheney, the most recent being Brainard Cheney and the Search for A Hero, by Dr. James E. Young. In November, 2016, Brainard Cheney was inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame with his nominating speech delivered by Baxley native Janisse Ray. Chamber to Host Gatsby Gala Annual Event The Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Chamber of Commerce will host its 52nd Annual Event with a Gatsby Gala theme Thursday, Feb. 22. The event will be a night to honor the local business and volunteer community with awards being given for Small Business of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Industry of the Year and Citizen of the Year. New and outgoing board members for the Chamber will be recognized and current Chamber Chairperson Sallie Ursrey will pass the gavel to Incoming Chairperson Kim Smith. The Jeff Davis School System’s STAR Student and Teacher will also be recognized. Attendees are encouraged to dress the part and wear Roaring Twenties style clothing for a fun night with jazz music entertainment, food, drinks, photos and a silent auction. Sponsorships and individual tickets are available and you don’t have to be a Chamber member to attend. The event will be held at Cotton Patch Extreme. There will be a joint meeting of the Jeff Davis Hospital Authority, the Jeff Davis County Commission and the Hazlehurst City Council at 6 p.m. at the hospital.
Southside Baptist Church will hold its monthly Senior Adult Luncheon on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 11:45 a.m. in the Family Life Center. Special speaker will be Brother Bob Powell of Douglas. Everyone come and bring your favorite covered dish or dishes and enjoy a good time of fellowship with friends.
The Jeff Davis County Veterans Association will meet Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the City Municipal Building next to the police station on the Alma Highway. All Veterans are welcome as well as spouses.
