  • First United Methodist Church Forever Young meets

    Forever Young, the senior adult group of Hazlehurst First United Methodist Church, will meet at 5:30 Jan. 11, says the Rev. Josh Duckworth, pastor.

    For their monthly outing they will travel to Cedar Lane Supper Club for fun, food and fellowship. All area seniors are invited.

  • MLK Day Parade and Ceremony

    Following the Martin Luther King Day Parade Saturday morning, Dr. Angela Battle will speak at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Girtman St. Dr. Battle has been in practice at Hazlehurst Pediatrics since July of 2007. She is a member of Jeff Davis Hospital Medical Staff and a member of the Rural Hospital Stabilization Committee appointed by Governor Nathan Deal. She is a graduate of Furman University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Doctor of Medicine from Morehouse School of Medicine. Her internship and residency was at Emory University School of Medicine.

    The parade begins at 10 a.m.

    The 16th anniversary closing ceremony and memorial service for the Masterbuilders had to be re-scheduled due to inclement weather. The event will now take place at 3 p.m. Jan. 13 at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, 103 North Street, Douglas.

  • Coastal Pines Technical College Commencement

    Matt Arthur, the new Commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia, will deliver the commencement address for Coastal Pines Technical College (CPTC) at the Jan. 26 event. The ceremony will be at 7 p.m. at the Wayne County High School Auditorium in Jesup.
    “We are extremely pleased to announce Commissioner Arthur as our featured speaker for commencement,” said Dr. Glenn Deibert, CPTC president. “Commissioner Arthur is truly committed to leading the State’s workforce development efforts through a system of 22 technical colleges, the State’s adult education and literacy program, and Georgia Quick Start, the nation’s number one customized workforce training program. It will be a great honor, on behalf of the college, to welcome Commissioner Arthur to one of our most important events, an occasion that allows us to pay tribute to our graduates for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments.”

  • Veterans Association Meeting

    The January meeting of the Jeff Davis County Veterans Association will be held at the Jeff Davis County Public Library Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m. All veterans are urged to attend the meeting, which will be held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Veterans Association.
    The program will include short talks by the original officers of the Veterans Association, and special remarks by Phil Merritt. Merritt and the late Richard Stone were instrumental in organizing the Veterans Association in January, 2008.
    While Veterans Association meetings are normally held at the Hazlehurst Municipal Complex on Johnson Street, for January only the group will meet at the library.
