Jeff Davis High’s softball team ran its win streak to 4 games last week with a 9-2 win over Thomasville and a 5-0 win over Berrien County.
But Monday in Jesup, the Lady Jackets fell 9-0 to Wayne County, a Class 5A team with a 19-3 record
Tuesday in Thomasville, the Lady Jackets got off to a strong start. Ava Bohannon led off the game with a double, Abby Williams singled to put runners at the corners. Anna Grace Alligood then grounded out to score Bohannong for a 1-0 lead. Savanna Robinette singled to score Williams and JD was on top 2-0.
After the Lady Bulldogs scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st to tie the game, Briley Reagin reached on a 1-out error in the second, Bohannon got her 2nd double of the game and then Williams singled but the runners couldn’t advance and the bases were loaded. With two outs, Robinette blasted a grand slam homer over the center field fence to propel Jeff Davis to a 6-2 lead.
That score held until the top of the 4th when Robinette got a 2-out double and scored on a Madison Joyce single. Gabby Taylor was hit by a pitch and Mikelynn Jones doubled to score another run and push Taylor to 3rd. Taylor scored on a passed ball to up the score to 9-2.
Robinette led the Jeff Davis batting with a single, 2 doubles, a homer and 5 RBI. Bohannon had a trio of doubles, Williams singled twice, Jones doubled and drove in a run, Joyce had a single and an
RBI, Taylor singled and Alligood drove in a run.
Taylor went the distance on the mound, giving up no earned runs on 2 hits, 4 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Thursday in Hazlehurst, the Lady Jackets avenged an earlier, 3-2 loss to Berrien with a 5-0 win over the Rebelettes.
The game was a pitchers’ duel as Taylor threw a 5-hit shutout against Berrien and a pair of Berrien pitchers limited Jeff Davis to only 6 hits.
The Lady Jackets got their runs early with a run in the 1st and a 4-run 2nd.
Bohannon led off the 1st with a single, went to 2nd on a passed ball and scored on Alligood’s single to center.
In the 2nd, Jones was hit by a pitch with one out and Skyden Chaney was safe on an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt. Briley Reagin then singled to load the bases. Bohannon then doubled to center to score to runs and put runners at 2nd and 3rd. After a pop out, Berrien intentionally walked Alligood to load the bases. Robinette then hit a grounder to shortstop and was safe on an error as Reagin and Bohannon both scored.
Reagin had 2 singles and a double to lead the Lady Jackets at the plate. Bohannon had a single, a double and 2 RBI, and Alligood had a single and an RBI.
Taylor gave up 5 hits, walked one and struck out 3.
With only one hit and eight errors against Wayne County, the Lady Jackets succumbed in 6 innings.
Jones’ 5th inning single was the only Jeff Davis hit of the game.
Taylor started on the mound and went 2 1/3 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 2 hits, a walk and no strikeouts. Alligood threw the final 3 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits, walking 2 and fanning 2.
