Jeff Davis High’s softball team had a down-and-up week last week, losing 8-0 to Cook Tuesday in Adel and then blanking Fitzgerald 9-0 Thursday in Hazlehurst.
The games left the Lady Jackets with a 5-7 overall record, 1-4 in Region 1AA.
In Adel Tuesday, there wasn’t much to write about as the Lady Hornets’ pitcher Abby Griffis threw a 5-inning perfect game, retiring in order all 15 batters she faced. To add to the Lady Jackets problems, JD had 4 errors in the contest.
Anna Grace Alligood took the loss on the mound. She gave up 5 earned runs on 10 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2.
Things turned around Thursday in Hazlehurst as Jeff Davis batters produced 13 hits in the 6-inning, 9-0 win over Fitzgerald, for Jeff Davis’ first region win.
Shortstop Savanna Robinette hit a pair of homers and catcher Ava Bohannon added another round tripper. Coming into the game, the Lady Jackets had only 2 home runs for the season, one by Robinette and the other by Mikelynn Jones. Bohannon, who led the Lady Jackets last season with 11 homers, ended a long drought with her first home run of the season, a line drive over the left field fence.
JD’s first run came in the bottom of the 1st inning as Robinette drilled a 1-out home run to left-center.
Jeff Davis added a run in the 2nd as, with the bases loaded and one out, Alligood grounded out into a delayed double play that allowed Gabby Taylor to score. Taylor, Madison Joyce and Skyden Chaney led off the inning with 3 straight singles.
In the 3rd, Bohannon hit her 2-run homer to make it 4-0.
In the 4th, Jones singled, went to 2nd on a Chaney sacrifice bunt, and scored on an Alligood single.
Jeff Davis made it 6-0 in the 5th as Joyce led off with a line drive double to left, Bohannon reached on an error and Briley Reagin singled to load the bases. Joyce scored on a Jones line out to center.
The Lady Jackets ended the game with a 3-run 6th, Abby William got a 1-out sing, Alligood doubled to score Williams and Robinette followed with a 2-run shot over the left field fence to bring the game to a close by the run rule.
Robinette had 2 homers and 3 RBI, Alligood had a single, a double and 2 RBI, Bohannon had a 2-run homer, Joyce had a single and a double, Jones had 2 singles and an RBI, and Reagin, Taylor, Chaney and Williams each singled.
Alligood was the winning pitcher. She went 6 innings, blanking the Lady Hurricanes on a pair of singles, one walk and 14 strikeouts. She struck out 8 of the first 9 batters she faced.
