Jeff Davis High lost a heartbreaker to Berrien County last Wednesday in Nashville.
The Lady Jackets led 2-0 on a 2nd inning 2-run homer by Mikelynn Jones but the Rebelettes fought back, scoring 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to pull out a 3-2 victory.
Anna Grace Alligood opened the 2nd inning with a walk and advanced to 2nd on Briley Reagin’s sacrifice bunt. Jones followed with a line drive over the left field fence to put the Lady Jackets in the lead.
Berrien got a leadoff triple and a single to cut the score to 2-1 and had runners at 2nd and 3rd with only one out. Alligood struck out the next batter and got the final out on a popup to get out of the inning with no further damage.
In the 5th, Berrien got a 2-out single and a ground ball was hit that appeared likely to end the inning. But an error put the batter on board and the next batter drilled a hard ground ball past the first baseman and two runs scored to put Berrien in the lead.
In the top of the 7th, the Lady Jackets tried to rally. Gabby Taylor walked ad took second on a Skyden Chaney sacrifice. Taylor went to 3rd on Abby Williams’ ground out, bringing leadoff hitter Ava Bohannon to the plate with the tying run on 3rd. Berrien intentionally walked Bohannon and Madison Joyce stepped to the plate. But Joyce hit a soft liner between 1st and 2nd and the second baseman made the catch to end the game.
The Lady Jackets had 5 hits. Bohannon had a pair of singles, Jones hit a 2-run homer, and Alligood and Joyce both singled.
Alligood gave up 1 earned run on 6 hits, walked none and struck out 5.
