Veterans golf tournament held

The first annual Jeff Davis County Veterans Association (JDCVA) Benefit Golf Tournament was held May 15 at Mulliganz Golf Club. The tournament was hosted by Tim Taylor and the fine employees of Triple H Specialty Company. The JDCVA would like to express their sincerest appreciation to Scottie Graham and Joel Poe for their relentless effort in promoting and organizing a successful tournament. The golf course was in superb playing condition because of the effort of John Turner and the course ground crew. We would, also, like to express our appreciation to all of the teams that participated.
Play began at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start, as 22 teams were excited to display their golfing skills. The morning round consisted of 18 holes to flight the teams for the afternoon nine hole round. After the first 18 holes, there was a pause in the action for lunch which, also, provided an opportunity for the teams to brag about their morning round, or not.
After lunch the final round started with each team assigned to one of three flights: Championship, 1st and 2nd based on the morning scores. At the end of the day a winning team was crowned in each flight: Championship Flight: Lott Conner, Jaron White, and McKenzie O’Connell; 1st Flight: Gary brown, Kaleb Brown, and Ethan Hulett; 2nd Flight: Ron Clark, Tony Darley, and Howard Ray.
The tournament was a tremendous success with a total of $10,043 being raised for the Jeff Davis County Veterans Association. Along with those already mentioned, the tournament would not have been successful without the following corporate sponsors: Bank of Hazlehurst, UFP Industries, Trowell Insurance Agency, SE, SIMFLO, 106.7 The Buck, Ram Alloys, Omni Cable, Greater Georgia Concrete, Webtrol, Sumitomo, Mahx F. Linster, Inc and Taylor Industrial Sales Co.
Again thanks to all who helped make the 1st annual Jeff Davis County Veterans Association Benefit Golf Tournament a success. Because of the support and effort of the local community, the JDCVA can continue to exist and serve the community. Each year they provide a $1000 scholarship to five deserving seniors, when needed they replace the 240 flags that they line the streets with every Memorial Day and Veterans Day. They are also responsible for the maintaining and placement of the crosses that line four major highways leading into Hazlehurst each Memorial Day representing the 32 Jeff Davis County Veterans who gave their lives for our country. The JDCVA also maintains the upkeep of Veterans Park located next to the county courthouse, and beginning this year on Thanksgiving, will provide food boxes for several struggling families in the community.
If you are a veteran and reside in Jeff Davis County, the Veterans Association would like for you to consider becoming a member. They meet the last Tuesday of each month and there are no membership fee. If interested contact Phil Merritt at 912-539-9200 or Ron Clark at 803-645-6125.
