Worth blitzes Yellow Jackets

Jeff Davis High’s Yellow Jacket baseball team dropped all 3 games in its region matchup with Worth County. The Jackets lost 9-4 last Tuesday in Sylvester, and fell 4-2 and 9-7 Friday in Hazlehurst.
In Tuesday’s game, the Rams jumped out to an early lead with a 5-run 2nd inning, and the Yellow Jackets had trouble producing runs the rest of the game.
The Jackets got 2 runs in the 4th on an RBI single by Jeremiah Davis and a bases loaded walk by Peyton Jones.
JD added 2 more runs in the 7th on Davis’ bases-loaded double after Treyton Webster walked and Tye Rea and Josh Worthington singled.
Davis led the offense with a single, a double and 3 RBI. Zack Hulett, Webster, Rea and Worthington each singled and Peyton Jones had an RBI.
Jone took the loss on the mound. He threw 4 innings, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits, walking 4 and striking out 2. Karter Galbreath pitched 2 innings, giving up 2 runs on one hit, 5 walks and no strikeouts.
In Friday’s opener, the Jackets out-hit the Rams 7-4 but went scoreless through 6 innings and found themselves down 4-0 entering the bottom of the 7th.
Galbreath walked to start the Jackets’ 7th inning and Jones was hit by a pith to put 2 on with no one out. Brayden Picanso followed with a single up the middle to score Galbreath and push Jones to 3rd. Jacob Laney then grounded out to 2nd to score Jones. Zack Hulett then singled to put runners at 1st and 3rd with one out. But Hulett was caught stealing and Webster grounded out to end the game.
Zack Hulett had a single and a double, Webster singled twice, Picanso had a single and an RBI, Seth Saunders and Rea both singled and Laney drove in a run.
Saunders was the losing pitcher. He went 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, walking 3 and fanning 6. Laney pitched the 7th, giving up a pair of unearned runs on 2 hits, walking none and striking out one.
The final game loss was a frustrating one as the Jackets led 7-3 after 6 innings only to give up 6 runs in the top of the 7th to lose 9-7.
After the Rams scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, the Jackets scored in each of the next 5 innings to take their 7-3 lead.
Jeff Davis tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the 1st as Webster led off with a single and Laney walked. An out later, Davis doubled to center to score Webster and Laney. After Jones walked, Galbreath drove in a run as he reached on an error. But the Jackets left the bases loaded.
In the second, Webster again led off with a single and went to 2nd on Laney’s sacrifice bunt. Rea followed with a single to right to score Webster and make it 4-3.
In the 3rd, Galbreath reached on an error again, Picanso singled and Webster flied out to center to score Galbreath.
Rea led off the bottom of the 4th with a walk, advanced to 3rd on a pair of passed balls and scored on Davis’ single to right.
In the 5th, Laney got a 2-out double to right and scored on Rea’s single to center to up the score to 7-3.
The top of the 7th got off to an ominous start as Worth’s lead-off batter reached on an error. The Rams followed with 3 straight singles and Worth was within a run at 7-6. After a sacrifice and a ground out the Jackets needed one more out to seal the win. But a single tied the game 7-7 and a hit batter and a 2-run single gave the Rams a 9-7 lead.
Both teams had 11 hits with 5 of Worth’s coming in the fateful 7th.
Davis was 3-for-4 with 2 singles, a double and 3 RBI. Galbreath had a single and a double, Rea singled twice and drove in 2 runs, Webster had a pair of singles and an RBI, Laney doubled, and Picanso singled.
Webster started on the mound and pitched well enough to win. He gave up 3 runs on a solo homer, a single and a double in the 1st inning. From there he settled down and blanked the Rams on 3 hits over the next 4 2/3 innings.
Laney took the loss in relief, going 1 1/3 innings. Worth got 4 unearned runs off Laney in the 7th as he gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits, walked none, hit one and struck out none.
