Jackets sweep Crisp
Jeff Davis High’s baseball team swept a 2-game series against Class AA Crisp County last week, winning 4-2 Wednesday in Hazlehurst and blowing away the Cougars 15-0 Saturday in Cordele.
Last Wednesday’s game was a pitchers’ duel as Treyton Webster and Jacob Laney combined for a 4-hitter against the Class AA Cougars and Crisp’s Mike Cunningham and Payton Chadwick also gave up only 4 hits.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but in the bottom of the 2nd the Jackets went ahead for good with a 3-run inning. The Jackets added an insurance run in the 5th.
In the 2nd, Andrew Hulett drove in a run with a bases loaded ground out and Brayden Picanso followed with a 2-run single.
In the 5th, Picanso and Zack Hulett singled, Webster walked and Tye Rea drew a bases-loaded, RBI walk to make it 4-2.
Picanso led the Jackets at the plate with a pair of singles and 2 RBI. Zack Hulett and Josh Worthington both singled and Rea and Andrew Hulett both picked up an RBI.
Webster started on the mound and went 3 innings. He gave up one earned run on 2 hits, walked 3 and struck out 5. Laney picked up the win in relief, getting 10 strikeouts in just 4 innings. He gave up 2 hits, walked one and hit a batter.
In Saturday’s game, the Seth Saunders continued the Jackets’ strong pitching but the Cougar pitching staff fell apart.
JD took an early lead as Crisp’s starter hit two batters and walked another to load the bases. Jeremiah Davis then drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead.
That score stood until the 3rd when Jeff Davis exploded for 5 runs, sending 11 batters to the plate. Webster and Worthington got the only hits of the inning. Two hit batters, two bases-loaded walks and an error added to the Cougar woes.
The Jackets entered the 5th with a 6-0 lead and exploded again, this time sending 14 players to the plate in a 9-run inning. Laney, Rea and Andrew Hulett singled, Webster singled twice, driving in 4 runs, and Karter Galbreath doubled to drive in 2 more runs. And two Crisp errors and 3 hit batters did more damage in the inning.
For the game, Crisp pitchers hit 7 batters and the Jackets stole 5 bases.
Webster led the offense with 3 singles and 4 RBI. Galbreath doubled and drove in 3 runs, Andrew Hulett had a single and 2 RBI, Rea had a single and an RBI, Laney and Worthington singled, Zack Hulett had an RBI, and Davis had 2 RBI.
Saunders had a strong outing on the mound with a 4-hit shutout. He walked 4 and struck out 10.
