Baseball team is off to 0-3 start

Jeff Davis High’s 2026 baseball season got off to a 0-3 start last week as the Yellow Jackets managed only one run in three games,
The Jackets opened with a 2-1 loss to Bleckley County last Friday in Hazlehurst. Saturday, the squad traveled to Gray and were shut out twice — 3-0 by Wayne County and 6-0 by host Jones County.
In the opener, starter Seth Saunders pitched well enough to win as he gave up only one earned run in 4 innings on the mound. But the Royals also got an unearned run to pull out the win.
Bleckley scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings while the Yellow Jackets’ run came in the bottom of the 3rd.
Jacob Laney led off the Jacket 3rd with a double, went to 3rd as Josh Worthington ground out to 1st, and scored on a Treyton Webster single to center.
Bleckley loaded the bases with no one out in the 5th inning but Jacket reliever Zack Hulett then got a line out to 2nd, a strikeout and a pop out to 2nd to get out of the jam.
The Jackets got the tying run to 2nd base in the last inning with just one out but the next two batters went down in order.
Laney had a pair of doubles to lead the offense. Webster singled and drove in JD’s only run and Karter Galbreath and Peyton Jones added singles.
Against Wayne County, Jeff Davis got only three singles — one each by Worthington, Jones and Jeremiah Davis. Jones was also hit by a pitch, giving JD 4 baserunners in the game.
Wayne got a single run in the first inning, that one coming on a passed ball. Catcher Davis threw out a runner on a steal attempt to keep Wayne from scoring more in the inning.
A bases loaded single in the third gave Wayne 2 more runs. JD got out of the inning without further damage as shortstop Hulett, 2nd baseman Brian Picanso and 1st baseman Karter Galbreath combined for a 6-4-3 double play.
Worthington, Davis and Jones got consecutive singles in the 4th but Worthington was thrown out at home to prevent the score.
Jeff Davis turned another double play in the bottom of the 4th as Andrew Hulett fielded a grounder at 3rd, threw to Picanso at 2nd and Picanso relayed the ball to Galbreath at 1st.
In the Jones County game, the Greyhounds got all the runs they needed in the 1st inning as they scored 3 times.
Webster started on the mound for the Jackets and retired the 1st two batters he faced. But a double, a run-scoring single and a 2-run homer put the Greyhounds up 3-0.
The Jackets got two runners on in the 1st with one out on a Webster single and a Davis walk, but they couldn’t score. They got 2 more on with one out in the 5th on a Braylon Varnadore walk and a Picanso single, but still could get a run across the plate.
Davis walked and Galbreath singled in the 6th, putting two runners on with one out again, but the Jackets couldn’t capitalize.
Webster had 2 singles and Galbreath, Jones and Picanso each singled for the Jackets only hits.
Webster threw 2 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, a walk and 3 strikeouts. Zack Hulett pitched 3 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts, and Brady Stevers threw an inning, blanking Jones on no hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
