Comprehensive Planning Begins

Jeff Davis County’s governments — the Jeff Davis County Commission, the Hazlehurst City Council and the Denton City Council — have initiated efforts to update the county’s comprehensive plan for the future.
Georgia state law requires that governments in each county in the state develop comprehensive plans and update those plans every five years. This year is the fifth year the current Jeff Davis County plan has been in place, so the 5-year update is required to be completed in 2026.
The update will be developed with guidance from the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Regional Commission.
The initial step required to develop the update is a public hearing to explain the process to citizens and get initial input from the public.
The first public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 5 p.m. at Mocha on Main at 5 Hinson Street, Suite 3A, in downtown Hazlehurst.
Citizens can also provide input on developing the plan through an anonymous online survey at http://bit.ly/4bWVQV9
The title for this year’s effort is “Steamboats to Semis: Rooted in Heritage, Driven for Development,” referring to the transition from the historic importance of commerce driven by the rivers that border Jeff Davis County during its early years, to the present importance of the trucking industry in the county.
According to an advertisement in this week’s edition of the Ledger, the joint comprehensive plan is a guide to making Jeff Davis County and its municipalities improved places to live, work, recreate, and do business for all concerned. It outlines a community vision, identifies needs and opportunities, defines long term policies, and includes a community work program to provide a guide and blueprint for future growth and development within the community jurisdictions. It is desired that the plan not only meets state requirements, but also truly expresses the community’s wishes for future growth and development.
The Feb. 17 public hearing will provide an opportunity for citizens to express their thoughts on the vision for the community’s future, to receive input on issues, and to develop strategies to make Jeff Davis County, Denton and Hazlehurst better places to live and work.
