Boys suffer upset loss to Bacon; defeat Worth & Brantley

Jeff Davis High’s boys won 2-of-3 region basketball games last week. Their wins came over Worth last Tuesday 69-48 in Hazlehurst and Brantley County 65-41 Saturday also at home. But Friday in Alma, the Jackets suffered an upset as Bacon came from behind in the final quarter to take a 60-53 win.
The Jackets finished the week with an 11-5 overall record and a 3-1 region mark.
The Bacon loss was a disappointment as JD led at halftime and held a 41-37 lead entering the final quarter. The Raiders outscored the Jackets 23-12 in the 4th quarter, hitting 12-of-15 free throws in the stanza to pull out the win.
J.J. Benjamin and J.T. Bryant led the Jeff Davis scoring with 16 and 11 points respectively. A.J. Sampson had 9, Mark Durden 7, Kolby Jarrell 4, and Jaiden West and Jaiden King 3 each.
Santiago Bizzell paced Bacon with 15, going 7-of-8 at the charity stripe in the last quarter, K.J. Barnes had 14, all in the 4th quarter, and Jamon Ellis had 14.
The Jackets jumped on Worth in a hurry, taking a 22-12 advantage in the 1st quarter and leading 39-20 by intermission.
Four Jackets hit in double digits led by Bryant with 16. West had 13 and Jarrell and Benjamin 11 each. King and Sampson were both only a bucket from double figures as they had 8 each, and Durden added a field goal.
Saturday night, the Herons stayed close in the early going but Benjamin and Jarrell pulled the Jackets away to a 33-25 halftime lead. Bryant had 9 of his 11 points in the 2nd half to lead JD’s pull away win.
Again, JD had 4 in double figures as Benjamin had 16, Sampson 12, and Jarrell and Bryant 11 apiece. King had 6 including a half-court 3-pointer to end the 1st quarter, and Durden 4.
Hayze Evans led Brantley with 13 and Jayden Byron had 10.
