Boys win 2 straight

In basketball play last week, Jeff Davis High’s boys snapped their 3-game losing streak and turned it into a 2-game winning streak.
The Lady Jackets, however, lost 3 games to drop to 0-5 for the season.
Coach Katie Beth Jordan’s girls enjoyed an experience they will remember for a lifetime as they traveled to Atlanta last Wednesday to face Atkinson County at State Farm Arena, home of the Atlanta Hawks professional basketball team.
The Lady Jackets lost 54-30 to Toombs County last Tuesday in Lyons, fell 48-26 Wednesday in Atlanta to Atkinson County and dropped a hard-fought 35-30 game to Pierce County Thursday in Hazlehurst.
Coach Thomas McAboy’s boys lost a close one to Toombs 40-38 then turned things around to easily roll over Pierce County 62-39 and, Saturday night in Pearson, they claimed a 78-60 victory over previously unbeaten Atco.
Tuesday in Lyons, the girls teams finished the 1st quarter tied 12-all. But the Lady Bulldogs turned things around with a 19-7 advantage in the 2nd quarter and, from there, padded their lead to take a 24-pt, win, 54-30.
Brylee Wyatt had her 1st double-digit game of the season with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pt. shots. Latrice Shivers hit a pair of buckets from beyond the arc in an 8-pt. 1st quarter but from there she hit only a free throw and finished with 9. Zaniya Brown and Marlee Burch had 4 apiece and Zijanna Mincey added 4.
In Atlanta, Atkinson County pounded the Lady Jackets in the early going, leading 30-7 at intermission and building their lead to 42-11 entering the final stanza. The Lady Jackets outscored the Lady Rebels by 9 in the 4th quarter to make the final score more presentable.
Shivers led Jeff Davis with 10 points, 8 coming in the 4th quarter. Wyatt had 7, Anna Grace Alligood 4, Zaniya Brown 3 and Burch 2.
Atco’s J. Northcut outscored JD by herself as she finished with 27 points.
Against Pierce County, the Lady Bears jumped out to a 12-3 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, threatening to turn the game into a rout. But the Lady Jackets out-scored Pierce 16-13 over the next two quarters and took the lead briefly in the 4th,
But Pierce rallied to take the 5-pt. win, 35-30.
Bree Coney led Jeff Davis with 14 points, Wyatt and Burch both had 6 and Shivers rounded out the scoring with 4.
Isabella Marx paced Pierce with 13 points.
In the boys game at Toombs, the Yellow Jackets led throughout most of the game but the Bulldogs rallied from behind to pull out the victory.
J.J. Benjamin and A.J. Sampson both hit in double figures for the Jackets with 16 and 14 points respectively. Kolby Jarrell and J.T. Bryant had 3 points each and Mark Durden added 2. Parker Stanley topped Toombs with 16 and Tucker Braddy chipped in 12.
The JD boys had few problems disposing of Pierce County as they took a 62-39 victory.
The Jackets scored 14 in each of the first three quarters and blew the game open in the 4th.
Benjamin topped the Jeff Davis scoring with 21 points and he was joined in double figures by Bryant with 12. Durden and Jarrell had 8 each, Jaiden West 4, Kolten Powell and Preston Godwin 3 each, Sampson 2 and Lee Shivers 1.
Nigel Brown hit 5 3-pointers and finished with 18 to lead Pierce.
Atkinson County came into Saturday’s game with a 4-0 record but the Yellow Jackets were never threatened as they cruised to the easy, 26-point victory.
Four Yellow Jackets hit in double figures led by Sampson and Bryant with 19 points each. Durden had 11, Jarrell 10, Benjamin 6, West 5, and King, Godwin and Amare Burney 2 each.
T. Day led Atco’s scoring with 19 points.
