Lady Jackets down Vidalia, Lanier
Jeff Davis High Schools softball team ended its regular season last week with a pair of non-region wins to reach the 20-win plateau for the season. The Lady Jackets defeated Vidalia 4-1 last Monday and downed Lanier County 5-2 last Wednesday.
Today (Wednesday) Jeff Davis (20-10) hosts Bleckley County (18-5) in a best-of-3 series in the first round of the 2025 Georgia High School Association State Playoffs.
Last Monday, playing in Vidalia, Anna Grace Alligood pitched a 4-hitter and Addison Giddens hit a solo homer as the Lady Jackets downed Vidalia 4-1.
Madison Joyce led off the game with a double, went to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on Ava Bohannon’s ground out to second, as JD took a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Alara McCall was hit by a pitch, Ryleigh Sellers singled, and Mattie Walsh’s sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. Abbie Williams followed with a 2-run single to make it 3-0.
Giddens led off the 4th with a line drive over the center field fence to make it 4-1 and that score held up.
Cori Mims had a pair of singles at the plate, Giddens homered, Madison Joyce doubled, Williams had a 2-run single, and Sellers and McCall both singled.
Alligood pitched a complete game, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, a walk, a hit batter and 4 strikeouts.
Against Lanier County, Carrie Ellen Arnold pitched a 1-hitter and both Lanier runs were unearned as the senior lowered her earned run average to a team-leading 2.724.
At the plate, Joyce had the hot bat, going 3-for-3 with a double and 2 singles.
After 4 scoreless innings, the Lady Jackets got all the runs they needed in the top of the 5th with a 4-run outburst. McCall opened the inning with a single, took 2nd on a passed ball and went to 3rd as Williams was safe on a fielder’s choice. After Williams stole 2nd, Walsh ripped a 2-run double to get the scoring started. Walsh went to 3rd on a Joyce single and scored on a passed ball. Joyce worked her way to 3rd and scored on Bohannon’s sac fly to center.
The Lady Jackets added an insurance run in the 7th as Joyce and Mims got 1-out singles and Joyce scored on a Bohannon single.
Behind Joyce’s 3 hits, Walsh had a 2-run double, Bohannon drove in a pair of runs with a single and a sacrifice fly, and Mims, McCall and Giddens singled.
Arnold walked 4 and struck out 5.
