Lady Jackets have busy week

It was a busy week for Jeff Davis High’s softball team last week as the Lady Jackets played 6 games in 5 days, winning 4 and losing 2.
Coach Brooke Wilcox’s charges lost their 3-game region series with Brantley County, 2-3, 7-0, 2-3, last Tuesday and Thursday, then bounced back to defeat Ace Charter School 10-4 Friday and sweep a double header with region foe Worth County Saturday 7-3, 6-2.
The games left JD with a 16-5 overall record and an 11-4 region record, going into this week’s important Tuesday-Thursday series with Bacon County (14-2 and 12-2).
In the first Brantley game, the visiting Herons scored a run in the top of the 7th inning to break a 2-2 tie and win 3-2. The winning run came after a lead-off double and a sacrifice bunt put the runner at 3rd. When the next batter hit a grounder ball to the mound, pitcher Anna Grace Alligood threw to catcher Ava Bohannon at home but the runner got back to 3rd, the batter then broke for second and got caught in a rundown as the runner at third made her way home.
The Lady Jackets’ runs came in the 1st, as Cori Mims singled and scored on Claire Stinson’s triple, and in the 4th, as Bohannon doubled, went to 3rd on Stinson’s ground out and scored on Alligood’s sac fly to right.
Alara McCall and Mattie Walsh also singled in the game.
Alligood pitched 7 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks and 9 strikeouts.
In the 1st game Thursday in Nahunta, Jeff Davis out-hit Brantley 11-3 to coast to the victory.
Addison Giddens had 2 singles, a home run and 2 RBI to lead the JD offense. Walsh and Mims both had a trio of singles with Walsh driving in one run, Bohannon singled in a run and Ryleigh Sellers added a single.
Carrie Ellen Arnold pitched a 3-hit shutout, giving up no free passes and fanning 6.
In Thursday’s nightcap, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through 4 1/2 innings when Brantley got 4 straight hits to start the bottom of the 4th to score their 3 runs.
The Lady Jackets started the top of the 5th with a Madison Joyce double and a Mims single. Joyce scored as Bohannon was safe on a dropped 3rd strike and Mims scored on a wild pitch.
Joyce and Sellers both had doubles, and Mims, Bohannon and Stinson each had singles.
Arnold started on the mound, yielded to Gabby Taylor to start the 5th, then returned to finish the 5th and 6th innings. Arnold pitched 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 5 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3. Taylor faced 2 batters, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits.
In Macon Friday, Jeff Davis spotted ACE Charter School to a 2-1 lead then rallied to take the 10-4 win.
Giddens and Bohannon hit their 4th and 8th homers of the season respectively, with Giddens hitting a 3-run blast and Bohannon a solo shot. Giddens’ homer came after Claire Stinson was intentionally walked on a 3-1 count with one runner on base.
For the game, Bohannon had 2 singles, a homer and an RBI, Giddens had a double, a homer and 3 RBI, Joyce had 2 singles, Walsh and McCall both singled and drove in a run, Sellers, Taylor and Stinson each singled, and Mims had an RBI.
Alligood pitched a complete came, giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.
In the first game of the double header against Worth in Sylvester, the Lady Rams got 3 runs in the 2nd off starter Taylor. But Arnold came on to blank Worth the rest of the way as Jeff Davis came from behind for the win.
It was Stinson’s turn to homer in the game as she ripped a solo shot, her 5th homer of the season. Walsh had a pair of singles and 3 RBI, Robinette singled and doubled, Mims singled and drove in two runs, and Joyce and Sellers each singled.
Taylor went 1 2/3 innings, giving up 3 unearned runs on 3 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. Arnold picked up the win in relief, going 5 1/3 innings and blanking Worth on 3 hits, 2 walks and 9 strike outs.
In the 2nd game in Sylvester, the freshman Alligood pitched a 2-hitter, giving up a 1st inning single, a solo homer in the 3rd, and then retiring 14 of the last 16 batters she faced.
At the plate, McCall’s run-scoring double was the only extra base hit for the Lady Jackets. She also singled. Robinette had a pair of singles and 2 RBI, Kenley Pearson singled and drove in a run, Joyce, Sellers and Walsh each singled, and Bohannon had an RBI.
Alligood did not give up a walk, hit one batter and fanned 5.
