Tennis splits with Pierce, downs Walker & Appling

On April 23 the Yellow Jacket boys and girls tennis teams faced the Pierce County Bears. The boys faced a tough Pierce team, eventually falling 0-3. The Yellow Jacket fellas finished their season with a region championship title and Sweet 16 state appearance.
The Yellow Jacket ladies also faced a tough battle against the Lady Bears. The ladies pulled a hard fought 3-0 victory against the Lady Bears advancing them to the Elite Eight in state rounds.
Last Monday, the Jeff Davis girls tennis team hosted The Walker School of Marietta. The Yellow Jacket ladies again won a well-fought match with a 3-0 victory.
The Yellow Jacket girls hosted Appling County in the Final Four in the state tournament. The match was long and competitive.
First off the court was Lexi Girtman with a 6-0, 6-0 No. 1 singles win.
Next up, Cori Mims gained another win for the Yellow Jackets at her No. 2 singles spot.
Shortly after Cori’s win, first doubles Noel Munoz and Aleah Parker came off the court with a loss in straight sets. Second doubles (Presley Cox and Ava Coleman) for the Lady Jackets battled with the Pirates in a super competitive, 3-set match but eventually came up short to the Lady Pirates. The second doubles loss left both teams with two matches won, meaning the last match on the court (No. 3 singles) would determine who went on to the State Championship.
After 5 hours and 9 minutes of play, the Yellow Jackets’ Demi Rush won the last point of their 3-set match.
Coach Mary Katherine Brown said, “While Demi is normally the first one off the court for the Yellow Jackets, today she was in it for the long haul. She was willing to stay out there all night if that was what it took. No matter if she is the first one or the last one off the court, she gets the job done for JD. She always sets a great example for her younger teammates.”
The Lady Jackets will head to Rome this Saturday for the state championship match against Brantley County of Region 3-AA. Play time will be at 9 a.m. at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.
