Jackets extend win streak to 16

Jeff Davis High’s baseball team extended its win streak to 16 games last week as they swept the Worth County Rams in a 3-game series. The Rams came into the series with a 19-2 record, a No. 3 ranking in MaxPreps and a No. 4 ranking in ScoreAtlanta.
The wins lifted the Yellow Jackets’ record to 16-7.
JD won the first game of the series 11-3 last Tuesday in Sylvester and then swept a double header Friday in Hazlehurst, 8-4 and 7-2.
In the opener, the Rams jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead. The Jackets tied the game after four and in the fifth they erupted for six runs to blow the game open.
The six runs in the fifth came after two outs. Ethan Picanso singled and Hayden Turner was hit by a pitch and Duke Stone followed with a line drive homer over the left field wall and suddenly it was 5-2. An error, a Carter Mullis single and a hit batter loaded the bases. Jude Worthington then drew a walk to drive in a run making it 6-2. Eli Saunders followed with a 2-run single to up the score to 8-2.
The Jackets added three more runs in the sixth, again with two outs, as Stone homered again and Mullis had a 2-run shot over the left field fence.
Stone’s two homers and four RBI led the JD offense. Mullis had a single, a homer and two RBI, Treyton Webster had a single, a double and two RBI, Saunders had a pair of singles and two RBI, Picanso, Turner, Mason and Andrew White each singled, and Worthington drove in a run.
Mullis started on the mound and earned the win. He threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up one earned run on four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. White pitched 2 2/3 innings, blanking Worth on no hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
In the first game in Hazlehurst, the Jackets had another 6-run inning, this time in the fourth which gave them an 8-0 lead. Worth managed two runs in each of the last two innings to make the final 8-4.
The JD 4th started with a walk, an error and a fielder’s choice as Mullis hustled to third to beat the throw and load the bases. Another error scored a run to make it 3-0. Picanso hit a 2-run double and two more runs scored on a Turner single to make it 7-0. Another error, the third of the inning, upped the tally to 8-0.
Picanso had a single. a double and two RBI, Turner had a pair of singles and two RBI, Stone had a double and an RBI, Mason had a single and an RBI, and Jackson Sayer drove in a run.
Mason started on the mound and went 6 1/3 innings. He gave up three runs on three hits, walked one and fanned six. Webster got the final two outs. He gave up one run on three hits, walked none and struck out one.
In Friday’s finale, the Jackets worked their way to a 5-0 lead after four and traded 2-run innings with the Rams for the final 7-2 score.
A 1-run Mason double got the Jackets on the scoreboard in the first. They added three more in the second on a 2-run Picanso double and a run-scoring single by Turner. JD made it 5-0 in the fourth on a Mason RBI single.
Kamo Munsayac’s RBI single and a Webster RBI single in the sixth got the final Jacket runs.
Picanso and Mason both had a single, a double and two RBI. Webster had a pair of singles and an RBI, Stone doubled, Turner and Munsayac each had a single and an RBI, and Colby Beach singled.
Beach was the winning pitcher. He threw five innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits, two walks and six strikeouts. White pitched the final two innings, giving up no runs on no hits, no walks and five strikeouts.
