Lady Jackets blank Berrien

After a week of rain-outs, Jeff Davis High’s softball team got back into action Monday with a 6-0 win over Berrien County in Hazlehurst.
Shortstop Jenna Miles was a double short of hitting for the cycle as she was 3-for-4 with a single, a triple and a homer, and four RBI. Carrie Ellen Arnold pitched a 4-hit shutout  and fanned 11 Lady Rebel batters.
After Arnold struck out the side in the top of the first inning, the Lady Jackets got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Miles led off the bottom of the first with a triple, and scored as Jaci Underwood’s hard-hit grounder to short was too hot to handle. Underwood stole second and scored on an Arnold single.
In the second, Arnold got all three outs again, fielding a soft grounder and fanning the next two batters.
Miles’ 3-run homer in the second made it 5-0.
Arnold hit a batter in the third for Berrien’s first baserunner. After a pair of pop-outs, catcher Kayleigh Sellers threw out the runner as she tried to steal second to end the inning.
Berrien got its first hit in the fourth, a double to center but Arnold retired the next three batters in order.
In the fourth, a Bentlee Metts walk was sandwiched by singles by Sellers and Laisha Hernandez to load the bases. Miles got a bases-loaded walk for her fourth RBI of the game. With the bases still loaded and no one out, the Lady Jackets couldn’t capitalize as the score remained 6-0.
The remainder of the game was uneventful as JD held on to the 6-0 lead.
Underwood and Arnold both had a single and an RBI to back up Miles’ day at the plate. Sellers and Hernandez also had singles.
Arnold walked one batter and hit one to go along with her 11 Ks.
