Cross County runs in Wingfoot XC Classic

The Jeff Davis High cross country teams traveled to Cartersville for the biggest meet in the state, the Wingfoot XC Classic hosted by the Atlanta Track Club. Over 120 high schools from Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and North Carolina participated in the two-day event, as well as 50 middle school and club teams.
The event started Friday afternoon with Youth (MS and clubs) races, followed by freshmen races, and then JV championship races. Then the big races of the meet happened under the lights as the top 30 schools participated in the championship races.
The Jeff Davis squads enjoyed the evening watching all of the races, especially the championship races, as they got to watch the best teams from the Southeast battle it out for the Wingfoot Trophy.
After the excitement of Friday night, the Jeff Davis squads were ready to race Saturday morning. The team had 15 individuals run personal best times and another seven run season best times.
In the varsity boys race, Pierce Parlor ran a season best to lead the way for the Yellow Jacket squad. The next four runners (Avila, Valora, Vega, Munsayac) finished in just 51 second spread behind Parlor, making for a very tight grouping of JD runners. At the 1-mile mark, the team was in 10th place, by mile two the team had moved into 9th place, and then finished strong to move into 8th place at the finish and a 18:26 team average, the fastest of the year for the team.
In the varsity girls race, Ellie Kate Marchant ran a personal best time and finished 21st overall for the Lady Jackets, while the junior group of Lewis, Lopez, and Relihan continue to improve. Freshman Marley Powell ran a personal best to round out the Lady Jackets five scoring runners. The team was in 9th place at the mile mark and moved into 7th place by the finish line, improving their team score by over 40 points along the way. The Lady Jackets had a 23:33 team average, their fastest average of the season.
In the JV boys race, Erick Trejo, Bryan Hulett, and Clayton Maxey all ran personal bests with Trejo and Hulett medaling in the JV race. In the JV girls race, Christy Wilcox and Isabella Rubio also ran personal bests.
