Jeff Davis High’s football team prepared for this week’s opener against Charlton County with a pre-season game last Friday against Atkinson County in Pearson.
The Jackets looked formidable, racing to a 28-0 lead with just under two minutes left in the first half. On the kickoff following their final score of the game, on the return, just as Jacket players were closing in on the returner, the lights went out without warning. A second later an ear-splitting thunderburst sent players from both teams headed off the field to safety.
After that, the game was called due to the weather.
The Jackets wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as junior Kyrice Hunt ran the ball twice, for 21 and 19 yds. and the Jackets were up 6-0. Fabian Valdelamar kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.
On the first play after the kickoff, Atkinson tried to run around its right side but Camo Munsayac dashed in from his cornerback position to nail the run for a 5-yd loss.
Minutes later, on 4th & inches, Kamrun Sanders rushed in from from his defensive back position to stop the runner and a host of Jackets jumped in to help and the runner was well short of the first down.
JD took over at their own 39, and on the first play freshman Marigus Sampson took the ball around the left side and with excellent blocking rambled 36 yards. But a penalty backed up the Jackets to the Atco 48. Two plays later, Carter Mullis took the ball on a reverse and raced 29 yards up the middle of the field to the Rebel 21.
After a 5-yd. walk-off moved the ball to the 26, quarterback Colby Beach threw his first pass of the game which slipped off the receiver’s fingers.
After a penalty backed up the Jackets, Beach threw a pass to the left and hit his target again but the ball slipped through the receiver’s hands.
Atkinson started its next possession at the Jacket 44 and on 3rd and 11 the Rebels went to the air but Jude Worthington broke up the pass and Atco had to kick.
The Jackets took over the ball at their on 18 and went right to work. Kyrice Hunt took the ball around the right side, cut through a huge hole and dashed all the way to the Rebel 31 for a 48 yard gain. After Mullis got nine and the Jackets were backed up on a penalty, Josh Worthington rolled through a big hole to the 3-yard line for a 22 yard gain. Elijah Benjamin then scored to make it 13-0. Valdelamar’s kick made it 14-0.
The Jackets’ next possession began at their own 45. Two plays later, Hunt carried the ball over the left side and with excellent blocking opening a lane, the junior dashed 54-yards for another TD. Valdelamar made it 21-0.
The Jackets tacked on another touchdown and on the ensuing kickoff the lightning burst put the game to an end.
