Jackets roll 15-0, 15-0

The Jeff Davis High baseball team made short work of out-manned Southwest Macon Monday in the first round of the 2023 Georgia High School Association Class AA State Playoffs, winning 15-0, 15-0 in Hazlehurst. Both games lasted only three innings and the Patriots did not get a hit in either game off JD pitchers Andrew White and Jonathan Bohannon.
The Yellow Jackets are the Region 1-AA champions and Southwest was the No. 4 seed from Region 2-AA.
The games left Jeff Davis with a 25-6 record while Southwest fell to 8-11.
The Yellow Jackets will host the winner of the Toombs County-Westside, Augusta series beginning Saturday. The Bulldogs and Patriots split their games Monday with Toombs winning 9-0 in the opener and Westside taking the second game 3-0. The “if” game was played Tuesday night.
In the first game, White threw a 3-inning no-hitter. He allowed only two baserunners, as he hit a batter in the second inning and another batter reached on an error. The second baserunner was thrown out by catcher Carter Mullis as he attempted to steal second. White did not give up a walk and struck out seven.
An 11-run second inning sealed the Patriots’ fate. It was a wild inning as the Jackets got four hits, the Patriots committed five errors, there were three walks, a hit batter, four wild pitches, a passed ball, two balks and a whopping eight stolen bases.
The Jackets got their 15 runs on just six hits: doubles by Mullis and Eli Saunders, and singles by Saunders, Ethan Picanso, Alex Mason and Ethan Griffin. Saunders and Griffin both drove in three runs, Mullis had two RBI, and Picanso, and Mason both drove in a run.
The second game was basically over after a half-inning as the Jackets, playing as the visiting team, put 14 runs on the board in the first inning.
The first inning was even wilder than the second inning in the first game. The Jackets had seven hits, there were three errors, four walks, two hit batters, five wild pitches, one passed ball, three balks and nine stolen bases.
Head Coach Paul Glass started substituting in the first inning and played 17 players in the game.
The Jackets had eight hits, triples by Picanso and Jude Worthington, a double by Mullis, and singles by Worthington, Saunders, Mason, Reese Mullis and Treyton Webster.
Mason drove in three runs, Saunders and Worthington two each, and Mullis and Webster one each.
Bohannon’s no-hitter came with one walk and four strikeouts. He allowed only two baserunners, both in the first inning, one on an error and the other on a walk.
