No one’s saying anything — By Tommy Purser

I received an anonymously written letter last week and it contained some interesting questions presented to the members of the Jeff Davis Hospital Authority. I assume all the authority members received the letter, but I don’t know for sure if that’s the case. No one’s saying anything.
Had the letter writer given me his/her name, I would have been happy to print the letter here for the public to see. After all, the hospital’s business is the public’s business so there would be no reason not to share the letters contents with the public.
But we have an unbreakable policy that says we do not publish unsigned letters in this newspaper. We can withhold the name of a letter’s author if there is a legitimate reason to do so, but I must know who authored the letter.
At last week’s hospital authority meeting, when a motion was entertained to adjourn the meeting, Dr. Jason Laney, who is a member of the authority, asked if the group was going to discuss a letter. I don’t know for sure if he was referring to the same letter that I received or to some other letter.
No one said anything so I didn’t learn anything.
There were a few comments made pertaining to the current community-wide controversy going on about the hospital, primarily from authority member Sharon Brown but the brief discussion included nothing specific.
No one said much of anything so I didn’t learn much of anything.
Moments later, the authority voted to close the meeting to the public to meet in “executive session,” which is a euphemism for “secret session.” I found that a bit odd since, moments before, the chair was asking for a motion to adjourn.
According to the Georgia Open Meetings law, public bodies can vote to go into executive session, i.e. secret session, but a reason must be given for closing the meeting to the public. No such reason was given.
No one said anything so I didn’t learn anything.
I was hoping to learn what the authority members were thinking about the letter in question if, indeed, they received such a letter but no one said anything, so I didn’t …. well, you know.
People have been asking me what I know about the controversy at the hospital but, honestly, I don’t know much more than anyone else. Because no one from the hospital authority is saying anything.
So, I haven’t learned their side of the story. I wish I knew that side — but I don’t. And I’m not sure why. Because no one’s saying anything. At least, not to me.
