Nine Running For City Posts

It appears that a lot of people want some changes in Hazlehurst’s city government as nine people threw their hats in the ring for three openings on the council — the incumbent and three challengers in the Mayor’s race, the incumbent and two challengers in Ward 3 and two newcomers in Ward 4.
Incumbent Mayor Bayne Stone is being challenged by two sitting City Council members, Ward 2’s John Ramay and Ward 4’s John Bloodworth. And political newcomer Laneka Shevelle Smith has also qualified to run for the Mayor’s job.
In Ward 3, incumbent Diane Bass Leggett has drawn opposition from Christopher M. Jones and Matthew Ashton Rentz.
And in Ward 4, Landon Jeffrey Chavis and Jose Guadalupe Zamora Jr. have qualified for the seat being vacated by Bloodworth.
Those were the qualifiers as of 5 p.m. Tuesday with the qualifying period still open today (Wednesday) until 4:30 p.m.
