One Dead, Two Injured In Two Saturday Accidents
A fatal, one-vehicle accident on the Altamaha Road and yet another accident at the Collins Street-Pat Dixon Road intersection highlighted the dangers that exist every day on the county’s roads.
Both accidents occurred Saturday. According to a State Patrol report, in the Altamaha Road accident, Henry Lee Morris, 28, of Bush Road, Hazlehurst, lost his life when the 1999 Lincoln Continental he was driving toward Hazlehurst just after 10 a.m. ran off the road, traveling almost 170 feet before Morris began attempting to steer to the left. But he over corrected and traveled approximately 172 feet before reentering the roadway. The vehicle traveled 92 feet and left the other side of the road and began sliding sideways. After traveling approximately 66 feet, the front of the vehicle struck a large tree, spun and struck two standing trees with the passenger side of the vehicle. Morris was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown to the passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle came to rest on the passenger side of the car.
According to another State Patrol Report, just after 1 p.m. the same day, Betty Ann Stephens of Bell Street, Hazlehurst, was driving her 2004 Chevrolet Colorado south on Collins Street and stopped at the stop sign at Pat Dixon Road. Holly Catherine Reynolds of Laura Lane, Hazlehurst, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox east on Pat Dixon Road toward Hazlehurst when Stephens pulled into the intersection in front of Reynolds’ car.
Reynolds’ vehicle skidded approximately 38 feet prior to impact before hitting Stephens’ vehicle on the passenger side. The Equinox traveled approximately 11 feet before coming to rest in the northbound lane of Collins Street facing south. The Colorado traveled approximately 45 feet before going into the ditch on the east side of Collins Street.
Both drivers suffered injuries in the accident.
