Please visit www.georgiateenwork.org as soon as you can to learn more about how you can help a teen this summer and how you can help your business grow by pledging a job to a youth in Jeff Davis County between the ages of 14-18. I am planning a community meeting to discuss this programs and many others being funded by the Stimulus money Georgia received. We just wanted to thank the city of Hazlehurst for hosting the recent GBA sanctioned BBQ contest. It was a very well run contest in a hospitable and charming southern town. We look forward to returning next year.

I read in last week's paper, that the city council is proposing a one mill tax increase, and an increase in trash fees. My question is, have any city employees been furloughed in an effort to cut cost for the city? Furloughing has been done by federal and state governments and these people are having to pay taxes here in the city. Just a thought.

EDITOR: Actually, in the last 12 months, two jobs have been eliminated and four more have left the employment of the city and were not replaced for a total of six jobs cut. The other employees are having to take up the slack and, therefore, cannot at this time be furloughed. Also, city employees have not had a raise in five years.
